Today in Labor History June 1, 1981: Two Filipino longshore labor organizers, Domingo & Viernes, were assassinated in Seattle, Washington on orders of U.S.-backed dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In 1986, as a result of ongoing protests, President Ronald Reagan told Marcos to “cut and cut cleanly.” That evening, Marcos and his wife Imelda fled to Hawaii aboard a U.S. air force plane, after 20 years of rule, with an entourage of 90 people (mostly servants), with 22 crates of cash valued at $717 million, 300 crates of jewelry of unknown value, $4 million worth of unset precious gems, $200,000 in gold bullion, $1 million in Philippine pesos and deposit slips for $124 million in banks in the Cayman Islands. Plus, countless crates of shoes. The Marcos hold the Guinness record for the largest ever theft from a government. Today, their son, Bong Bong Marcos, rules over the Philippines, with Sara Duterte as his vice-president, daughter of the brutal previous president, Rodrigo Duterte, who has been linked to the death-squad murders of over 1,400 alleged drug dealers and street children.

9 of 10 Filipinos want Sara Duterte to face impeachment charges.

The House of Representatives impeached the PH vice president in February over allegations of misusing confidential funds and making death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., among others.

www.bbc.comPhilippine elections: Duterte elected mayor from ICC prisonThe former president's win was expected, but other races in the midterms proved less predictable.

During the cold war it used to be there was good dictatorships that were supported by the West/US and bad dictatorships supported by the Soviets, today there's the same norm just with a bit more nuance. #Duterte is being tried at the #ICC for overseeing +10k EJKs, I am certain that #Netanyahu will never be arrested and tried for overseeing 5x more in less than 25% of the time that Duterte had to kill his victims because Duterte is #China's guy

Asia Times · Duterte trial loaded with heavy geopolitical implications - Asia TimesFew saw it coming. Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's arrest for alleged crimes against humanity under the aegis of the International Criminal

> Mr. Duterte was always clear about his intent. He said, over and over, often to applause, that anyone who resisted arrest on suspicion of selling or using drugs would be killed. They were drug addicts, he said, and addicts are “sick with paranoia” and “are always armed.” Killing them is not murder, only justice, he said. He encouraged the public to take part in the killings.
