Sunguramy :nb_lily:<p>Collecting water samples from a spring for eDNA! What is eDNA? Glad you asked! The e stands for “environmental”. You see, organisms (you included) are always shedding cells n such into their environment. Think about the hair you lose, or skin that sloughs off, or those toenails you cut and lost somewhere when it flew away. So essentially, DNA gets into the environment. </p><p>Above ground, eDNA breaks down pretty fast. The UV from the sun is not very friendly and eDNA doesn’t know to wear sunscreen to protect itself. But *underground*, which is what we are interested in, it stays intact for years. (Literally. Our experiment ended about 2.5 years in when a jerk dumped our sample buckets but the last reading was just as clear as the first, no degradation.) This means we can easily detect organisms that make subterranean habitats their home. Many times these places are inaccessible, just little springs no human could fit in. Markus Horning<p>Resurrection Bay Sharks</p><p><a href="https://vimeo.com/1031267933?share=copy" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">vimeo.com/1031267933?share=cop</span><span class="invisible">y</span></a></p><p>Science Communications film maker Rose Dalrymple followed us on our DSCT shark camera trap adventures in Resurrection Bay this last summer, and produced this short video clip introducing our project.</p><p>In this project, we are deploying our DSCT (Deep Submersible Camera Trap) – a Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) benthic lander – together with the Passive eDNA &amp; Sediment Collection Apparatus (PESCA) water sampler as well as additional environmental sensors deep in the waters of Alaskan fjords. The DSCT with PESCA is placed in the aphotic (light-less) zone at depths between 200 and 400 meters, and can record video and ocean data for up to 48 hours. As reported in our previous blogs, we use active deep red illumination which most deep sea organisms cannot see.
