German Digital Minister wants open standards and open source as guiding principle. #EU_OS is fully open source and work for a Proof-of-Concept is on the way.
@eu_os @Mads5408 have you seen https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/seneste/baade-koebenhavns-og-aarhus-kommune-vil-droppe-microsoft ?
Could #EU_OS play a role here?
Best,
Robert
Day 2 of #hackdays2025: #EU_OS has now a new Proof-of-Concept section on the website (work in progress). The team enrolled some #bootc machines in #Foreman. The results so far were pitched to a selection board. Thanks to the great team who made this all possible!
Unfortunately, #EU_OS has not been selected to proceed to the next stage.
2/2 As of now, the first three goals are basically done.
Setting up #foreman is challenging. If you can help, reach out: https://blog.riemann.cc/about#contact
Day 1 of #hackdays2025: #EU_OS has started with possibly the biggest team of 14 people from several countries. To build the proof of concept, the team works on several sub tasks:
- building the EU OS image
- setting up full-disk encryption
- setting up FIDO2 hardware key to unlock encryption
- fleet management with #Foreman
- user management with #FreeIPA (if time is left)
1/2
️Today will probably be the transition from special military operation to WAR
*Breaking news*
A powerful explosion is reported in Russian Severomorsk.
Submarines with nuclear weapons are based there.

2 days until #EU_OS at Paris #HackDays: A part of the team arrived already in Paris. The planning of the work started in the public Gitlab at https://gitlab.com/eu-os/eu-os.gitlab.io/-/issues/?label_name=hackdays2025
@rriemann brought an old Thinkpad X220 (released 2011) that will serve as a test device until a more modern device has been found!
Instead the public sector should invest into digital common infrastructure that match the values of democratic societies. https://publiccode.eu/en/
3 days until #EU_OS at Paris #HackDays: How many hours do you use your #Windows office computer per day? For 6h in front of the computer, this makes 6h·20d·11=1320h per year: Time that users spent in an ecosystem entirely controlled by few powerful, rich people in other countries.
And more and more, #Windows wants to increase this control and extract value for its shareholders. Change of license models to extract annual rents, forced upgrades to #Windows11, etc. 1/2
4 days until #EU_OS at Paris #HackDays: project lead Robert and few supporters start already the weekend before to increase the chances to have a working Proof-of-Concept by the end of Tuesday. Learn more at https://eu-os.eu 1/2
2/2 Only this week we learnt that a jury will rank the project and offer prices. Cross your fingers for us or even better, join on Matrix at #eu-os:kde.org or for developers at #eu-os-dev:kde.org to offer your help for a competitive advantage!
Also, the first ever merchandise arrived – here presented by "model" Robert.
5 days until #EU_OS at Paris #HackDays: The architecture for EU OS must permit a migration phase in which both #Microsoft #Windows and EU OS run in parallel (hybrid setup). This way, organisations can do tests with only few of their staff (e.g. developers/engineers) while keeping everything as is for e.g. HR/business-critical functions. In principle, staffers may also have a Windows and an EU OS laptop at the same time. 1/2
Side note, not only have I studied business (which includes an understanding of marketing). I also took a little psychology, which was a requirement of my business degree, but I took a few more courses became the topic interested me (almost considered changing majors). Lastly, I also knew more than a few people who worked for the government, and they were very keen on teaching me about propaganda.
The whole, EU_OS - A Linux distribution for Europeans, while also in the same breath telling us how Fedora, the free upstream to CentOS and IBM's Red Hat, is going to be the foundation of all this... I can already hear the chanting in the background: "USA, USA, USA!"

As I said, more sources are good things, because as you said, we do not want to necessarily centralize things. But I am OK with Linux distributions being based out of "random location" - Because everything has to come from somewhere.
His thing is marketing, and it appears to be dishonest marketing at that. This whole EU_OS concept came around the same time people were freaking out about the sudden and alarming changes concerning the United States. At a time when people are questioning and rightfully doubting if relying on the USA for so much, this whole time, was in fact a bad idea (it was).
In comes EU_OS (the concept) and with a nice European branding, but American infrastructure (Fedora). That is not an effort to distance themselves from the United States, that is an underhanded tactic to get people to low-key embrace it.
They're not even open to the idea of a "hard fork", choose to keep their concept following Fedora as their upstream. And when you argue their concept, they say, well, it is only a concept -- But they've not addressed anything, because they have no clear plans to do so.
I studied business (Business Management). I know marketing and public relations when I see it. The goal is to be as passive about this while trying to sway people to accept and adapt.

@raito@nixos.paris @rriemann@chaos.social @neo@social.hacktheplanet.be @eu_os@eupolicy.social
It's marketing 101
He is marking Fedora Linux, an American distribution, as the idea concept for Europe, at a time when people are trying to distance themselves from the United States.
It is misleading and dishonest.
#EU_OS #Europe
@raito@nixos.paris @rriemann@chaos.social @neo@social.hacktheplanet.be @eu_os@eupolicy.social
As I said, I do not think he is working in good faith.
Anytime some has suggested an actual project within Europe or elsewhere, outside the United States, he doubles down and claims how that is not feasible. Yet, he claims to be wanting his EU_OS is in the best interest of Europe.
I'm an American, and I do not presume American values and American corporations, along with American interest, should be the flagship of Europe.
#EU_OS
EU_OS currently offers only a false sense that they're all European, while completely relying on the USA.
Europe made, registered, and trademarked OSes
* Mageia, France https://www.mageia.org
* Pisi, Turkey https://www.pisilinux.org
* Chimera, Spain https://chimera-linux.org
* NixOS, Netherlands https://nixos.org
* Alpine, Norway https://www.alpinelinux.org
* Open Mamba, Italy https://openmamba.org
* Parabola, France https://www.parabola.nu
* Void, Spain https://voidlinux.org
There is good reason for Europe to have its own operating system.
But EU_OS is not trying to be an independent European Operating System.
Rather, they're looking to use a USA OS (Fedora) and put a European Flag on it. If they decided they were going to take that OS, and break away from America (a hard fork), which would make them independent, that would be great, but they're not.
As it stands now, EU_OS would be no different from relying on Chian's OS, Deepin Linux.
@rriemann@chaos.social @eu_os@eupolicy.social
I am not here to keep score or play games. I am here to inform and educate. Your concept is currently misguided and misleading.
