Bill Minarik<p>An amazing talk by Max Lloyd of Penn State University. He used clumped isotopes to separate the effects of CO2 abundance, water availability, and temperature on plant stress. The plot shows the clumped signal in lignin from recent trees but he has analyzed samples from the last glacial maximum. An implication is that even in a high-CO2 world, water and heat stress reduce the ability of plants to produce biomass.<br><a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2306736120" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">doi.org/10.1073/pnas.230673612</span><span class="invisible">0</span></a><br><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/PSU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PSU</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/McGillUniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>McGillUniversity</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Photosynthesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photosynthesis</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/EarthSystemScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EarthSystemScience</span></a></p>

Bill Minarik<p>Sara Knox from <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Geography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Geography</span></a> told us about the challenges of characterizing greenhouse gas balances in wetlands. Flux tower measurements in the Fraser River delta (British Columbia) suggest that, in addition to all their other benefits, wetlands can have net greenhouse gas storage.<br><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/McGillUniversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>McGillUniversity</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/UBC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>UBC</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/EarthSystemScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EarthSystemScience</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wetlands</span></a></p>
