Ugh, it is HOT in central Texas right now. Fortunately, Austin does not lack for fabulous desserts, including locally-sourced and unique Lick ice cream deliciousness:

Hokay. Pulled BBQ pork, homemade coleslaw and potato salad, and fresh NEPA sweet corn as both vegetable and dessert for supper. I believe the corn variety is "Bread & Butter" (white and yellow kernels on the same ear): at least it looks and tastes like what my Uncle Luther used to grow each year.
I'm stuffed silly, and very happy.
Alas, no listen later was saved for Friday's shows, so here's the link to my sweet article about local honey...Plus, there's a hot honey recipe!

Spent #FoodDayCanada weekend canning.
Yday: jardinière (with leftover brine for cucumber chunks).
Today, it's relish and garlic dills (not done yet). Local rainbow carrots for the j. The relish ingredients before turning over for the overnight cure.
Deets in alt-text.
Spot on, Bakkerij Keilekker

Be prepared to line up when you visit San Antonio's Guenther House for breakfast or lunch, but the San Antonio River surroundings are so pleasant, you may not mind the wait:

Strawberry season has begun. They are so sweet this year!
It's asparagus season and I've got the spear-it in me! This week's food column is about the first vegetable of the season. Great visit with Tim Barrie at Barrie's Asparagus, plus a recipe for Bang Bang Asparagus from Chef Ace from Cambridge's Blackshop!
We’re firmly in “big farmer’s market salad for Saturday dinner” territory. Tonight was: lettuce from our farm share, miso butter glazed roasted harukei turnips, roasted beets, roasted carrots, Parmesan cheese chunks, & toasted pistachios. With a yogurt-herb dressing using a mix of herbs from the market and from our garden. In a few weeks, no one at the market will have lettuce, as it gets too hot. Will enjoy it while it lasts! #Food #Vegetarian #EatLocal

Strawberry season is nearly here.
I reserve the right to toot about it cheerfully from next month until the harvest ends. They’re one of my favourite fruits!

When a chef I trust pulled me aside to tell me about someone who's fighting the odds to start a hot sauce company, I took notice. Jacob Wilkinson, who is visually impaired, turned a pandemic project into Blowing Smoke, featuring Ontario-grown produce with fantastic names like Devil’s Night and Yellow Snow.
Am so honoured he let me tell his story.

My next move towards more ethical eating is to stop with any kind of big fast-food chains. Local slop only.
This will not only help me eat less unhealthy food and less meat but also give that money to small businesses in the community and, in some cases, local production.
