IT News<p>2025 One Hertz Challenge: Using Industrial Relays to Make a Flasher - These days, if you want to flash some LEDs, you’d probably grab a microcontroller.... - <a href="https://hackaday.com/2025/08/10/2025-one-hertz-challenge-using-industrial-relays-to-make-a-flasher/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">hackaday.com/2025/08/10/2025-o</span><span class="invisible">ne-hertz-challenge-using-industrial-relays-to-make-a-flasher/</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/2025hackadayonehertzchallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>2025hackadayonehertzchallenge</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/flashercircuit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flashercircuit</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/electronic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronic</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/contests" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>contests</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/flasher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flasher</span></a> <a href="https://schleuss.online/tags/relay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>relay</span></a></p>
The Gregzone<p>Made progress on getting the broken Roland SoundCanvas SC-55mkII that I got for cheap on eBay to work! I was fairly sure a clock signal (or rather the absence of one) was the culprit, and after poking around the board tracing clock signals I found a spot where one abruptly stopped. </p><p>Turns out a 40MHz low-pass filter was missing entirely from the board! After bodging it with a wire (since it’s just a filter, so the worst that happens is noise causes occasional problems), the unit came up! 🎉 But the display has issues. Half of it is dead, and the first letter of the instrument name is garbled. This appears unrelated to the first problem, and suggests an issue with the display board itself; all lines going to the display look good.</p><p>Given that another filter on the board was already bodge-wired, and a 455MHz crystal (only needed for the remote) was cut out, *and* given this display problem, I think this may have been a parts unit for someone.</p><p><a href="https://retro.pizza/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://retro.pizza/tags/roland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>roland</span></a> <a href="https://retro.pizza/tags/soundcanvas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>soundcanvas</span></a> <a href="https://retro.pizza/tags/vintageelectronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vintageelectronics</span></a> <a href="https://retro.pizza/tags/synth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>synth</span></a></p>

JimmyChezPants 🇨🇦<p>Hey <a href="https://growers.social/tags/Electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Electronics</span></a> <a href="https://growers.social/tags/Batteries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Batteries</span></a> </p><p>So I'm a bit unclear on something with a #18650 <a href="https://growers.social/tags/BMS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BMS</span></a> - specifically, a 3s6p 12v battery pack with integrated BMS, that arrived with two pairs of Red/Black wires coming out of it, one with a barrel jack and the other just wires, and zero explanation, this is clearly an "obvious" situation to people with the slightest bit of experience. </p><p>Have also ordered an appropriate 12.6v charger, once I sorted out what was required there. Waiting for it to arrive, have not used the battery pack yet. This is intended for a Pi5 with a HifiBerry amp in a "Ghetto Blaster" type configuration, for use during yard work and other mobile audio needs. </p><p>What I'm wondering is, if I've got it running on batteries, and I plug the charger in, is that safe? Will it recharge the batteries while continuing to supply power to the device in a smooth fashion? Or do I need to acquire another UPS-type board to add to the innards?</p>
Paul<p>Found it! <br>There was an optical limit switch that I missed. I think the LED died, and fortunately, it was really easy to open up and swap out the LED. Just needed some trial and error to find one bright enough in the right wavelengths. <br><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/penPlotter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>penPlotter</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retroComputing</span></a></p>
Paul<p>Soo… I bought another plotter. It was close by, dirt cheap, and came with some other goodies I’ll share later. <br>On power up, the pen carriage homes all the way to the right, but never stops. I don’t see any limit switches, and it goes on for much longer than it would take to do the entire travel.<br>There’s this flywheel looking thing labeled Ferrofluidics corp, which looks suspiciously fancy (it’s got a serial number). <br>The stepper motor has 8 wires.<br>So.. what gives? Anyone know how a mechanism like this would have homed itself, or what that mysterious blue object is?<br>It’s an intriguing mystery… plus I’d love to actually get this working; it’s a nice medium size between my other two plotters. <br><a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/penPlotter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>penPlotter</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/stepperMotor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stepperMotor</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retroTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retroTech</span></a> <a href="https://oldbytes.space/tags/retroComputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retroComputing</span></a></p>
