I've seen canisters of artificially scented, chemical concoctions of aerosol-sprayed substitutes for reality that promise the aroma of "clean laundry" or "fresh breeze."

Amazing.

For free, one can go outside and experience the real thing. Without the carcinogenic implications . . .

Clean Up the Beach in #solidarity with #Heiltsuk Nation

June 8 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Join RAVEN and #Surfrider for a World Oceans Day beach cleanup, where we’ll be fundraising for Heiltsuk Nation’s legal challenge that aims to protect #marine #ecosystems from coast to coast to coast.

This year, we’re choosing to engage in #community reciprocity not just for our own local #watersheds, but as an act of solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation, whose own beach cleanup — following the Nathan E. Stewart spill — is so much more complex.

So, come out to #CloverPoint in Victoria on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 11am-1pm for a community-powered beach cleanup. Together we are aiming to fundraise $2,000 for Heiltsuk’s legal challenge on #WorldOceansDay.

95-Metre ‘Mega-Banner’ Urges #Carney to Pick a Path, Choose Renewables and #ClimateAction

Ahead of next week’s Speech from the Throne, four national climate groups mounted a 95-metre fabric installation in Ottawa’s Major’s Hill Park on Wednesday, urging Prime Minister #MarkCarney to “pick a path” between new oil and gas #pipelines and climate action.

On the same day, Faith and Climate Action held a “pray-in” at #RoyalBank of #Canada headquarters in Toronto, protesting bank financing for new #fossilfuel infrastructure like the proposed #PrinceRupert Gas Transmission #PRGT project in #BritishColumbia which is expected to receive #BCgovernment approval within days.

The “mega-banner” in #Ottawa “took over 20 hours to construct, dozens of volunteers, sheer grit, and caffeine-fuelled delusion,” wrote Emily Lowan, fossil fuel supply campaigns lead at Climate Action Network-Canada (CAN-Rac), in an email to supporters. “It may even break records as the largest banner in Canadian #climate movement history!”

I am a #medic. If you know nothing else about me, know that.

Whatever happens, wherever you are, whoever you are—call me and I will come for you. That's what medics do. That's what we are.

Mostly.

npr.org/2025/05/21/nx-s1-53877

I've made my living many other ways over the decades. #Infantry, #writing, #web development, #database administration, #teaching, #clinicaltrials, #bioinformatics. Maybe one of these days writing again, for more than a few months this time. All of them have shaped me to one degree or another.

They're all things I did, all part of who I am. Medic is what I am. If you're lucky enough to have your own "what" as well as "who" ... well, you understand.

Until World War One, more #soldiers in every war died of #disease than of #injuries received on the #battlefield. The decreasing death toll of modern wars (you can look it up) is directly due, in large part, to advances in military public health. Those advances travel both ways, back and forth between the military and civilian worlds, preserving life all the while.

#Epidemiology and #immunology and #biostatistics and #environmental #medicine aren't TV fodder, generally speaking. It's hard to make them look glamorous. They're just the reason you're alive to read these words.

#PublicHealth, taken as a whole, is unquestionably the greatest advance in medical history. Nothing else even comes close. Arguably it's the greatest advance in history, period, with no qualifiers needed.

Deliberately breaking it is mass #murder.

I am a medic. I am also a human being. The alleged human beings responsible for this monstrosity, if they ever call me, will call in vain.

*2 DAYS LEFT*
From The Discourse, Cowichan area based independent media. Please take the #survey if you care about access to #wilderness areas. Mosaic is one of the worst ecocide corporations in BC & they're responsible for much #deforestation on #VanIsle & surrounding islands.

Mosaic published a survey earlier this month to gather public input on responsible recreation. The company says it will use the survey results to guide the company’s “commitment to responsible #ForestStewardship — balancing public recreation with #environmental protection.”

If you’d like to let Mosaic know what you think about opening up the gates to the private land it manages, the survey is open until May 23.

The Discourse published an article by reporter Rowan Flood covering the ongoing battle between outdoor recreation groups and Mosaic Forest Management. Mosaic manages huge swaths of land on #VancouverIsland and tightly controls access to what one outdoor enthusiast called the most impressive and “jaw-dropping” parts of the Island. I was completely floored to learn that nearly 600,000 hectares of #unceded land on the Island is privately owned and is managed by a single company.

Greenpeace sought to stop 3 new oil and natural gas fields, claiming that the state failed to conduct a full #environmental impact assessment as required by #EUlaw.

The Court largely agrees with this interpretation, but does not require development of the fields to halt as the assessment is made.

Great cross-border collocation on #environmental impacts of #minerals #mining in #Indonesia.

At the same time, it's notable that the #WedaBay mine gets, by far, the most international attention, and the reason is because it''s partly owned by #France's Eramet.

For all the other mines in Indonesia owned entirely by domestic and/or #Chinese corporations? Doubt they'll be the focus of this type of investigation anytime soon.

From #DogwoodBC ->

The #BCgovernment doesn’t think people care about #ClimateChange any more. But the next drought or heat dome is coming, and they’ll see just how much we care then. The time to solve a disaster is before it starts, not when you’re in the middle of it.

As of right now, B.C. has no climate plan. They’ve dismantled #CleanBC - an already meek attempt to protect British Columbians from the worst possible outcomes, with nothing to replace it. And what’s worse, they’re charging ahead with plans to approve another fracked gas pipeline: the #PrinceRupert Gas Transmission pipeline.

#FrackedGas is methane, a greenhouse gas that accelerates global heating. #PRGT would not only add to the carbon emissions responsible for more wildfires, it would also increase fracking operations in northern B.C. which doctors and scientists alike have shown make people in surrounding communities sick.

Approving PRGT is reckless. Dangerous. And completely out of step with what this moment demands. We don’t need more #FossilFuels — we need real climate action. Right now.

Send a letter to #Climate Minister Tamara Davidson. Demand a stop to the PRGT pipeline.

What does Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government have in common with the reigning New Democratic Party all the way across the country in B.C.?

In recent weeks, both have introduced legislation that could give extraordinary powers to sidestep environmental rules to allow for development. With these laws, both governments are writing themselves “blank cheques” — that’s according to critics who independently chose the exact same words in recent interviews with The Narwhal. @thenarwhal
