"The original version of “Dona Dona,” “Dos Kelbl” (“The Calf” in #Yiddish) originally appeared in the Yiddish play “Esterke,” written as a #poem in 1932 by Arn/Aaron Zeitlin and composed by Sholom Secunda. The poem is likely based on a story from the #Talmud where a #rabbi is punished by G-d for his lack of compassion towards a calf being led to slaughter. The play itself is based on the #Jewish legend of Esterke, the Jewish mistress of the king of #Poland.

Many wonder if Zeitlin wrote “Dos Kelbl” as an allegory for the #Holocaust, but the timing doesn’t match up. Still, it’s widely understood to be an allegory for Jewish #exile — at least, until its words were changed in the 1970s."

Kveller · My Toddler Loves This Jewish Lullaby About a Calf Being Slaughtered – KvellerIt’s midnight on a summer night. I’m singing my toddler the song “Dona Dona” and wondering, for the millionth time, why I’m singing her a depressing song about a calf being slaughtered — and why she is so obsessed with it. If you think I’m exaggerating about it being depressing, these are the verses: On […]

"Take Me Down" is a song recorded by American #countryMusic band #Alabama. It was released in May 1982 as the second single from Alabama's album #MountainMusic. Written by #Exile band members #MarkGray and #JPPennington, the song was originally recorded by Exile in 1980. The Exile version was released as a single, but failed to become a major hit, although it reached number 102 on the US #BubblingUnderChart and number 11 in #SouthAfrica. However.

@EINS_Institute That being said I'd not be surprised if #Trump, who evidently does "speedrun Hitler" would #exile and #denaturalize #opposition members and #marginalizes folks.

Espechally since this ticks "all the scary boxes" I learned about in school and beyond

Juice Newton & Exile performed concert sets outdoors before the annual fireworks outside the Coliseum in #RichmondVA. Juice had flown in from Buffalo, where the night before she'd performed before a paid crowd of over 13,000 with Eddie Rabbit at a minor league baseball park where they performed their hit 1985 duet "Both To Each Other (friends & Lovers".

In Richmond, after her free pre-fireworks set at the outdoor 6th Street Marketplace stage, the Times-Dispatch newspaper noted her "versatility and spunk" and said " The #VirginiaBeach native can belt out a ballad, hold a note, and sing with the emotion of our greatest stars".

Touring all over that summer from Alaska to Alabama, 1988 was a big comeback trail year for Newton, who had last placed five top ten singles on country charts in 1986 off the album "Old Flame". In 1988, Newton returned to the top ten of the country charts with "Tell Me True" from her #RCA album "Emotion" and had a popular duet single with Michael Johnson released that fall.

#Nashville based #Exile who opened the Richmond gig, eventually became #JuiceNewton's touring backup band, and in 2015 , they even played together again on July 4th in St. George Utah. Septuagenarian Newton has since retired from touring, and has not performed publicly since 2021.

you are not an "exile" because windows 10 is ending support. you are not a "refugee" for installing linux either. you are not a "survivor". there are actual people who meet the literal criteria for being a survivor, exile, refugee, etc who don't get to use these words for themselves and instead have the phrases co-opted for some technological moment where someone installs a different operating system on their computer. very frustrating. we can do better.
