Sleep? I don't need no stinkin' sleep.

So on that subject; remember that piece of fabric I got by accident that was supposed to be apricot but instead was the colour of tomato-sauce-stained tupperware?

I dyed it black.

But then! It wasn't black! It was what I will refer to as "poverty goth" black; it looked like black that was washed too many times, UV bleached, somewhat shadey.

It looked black alone, but didn't next to any other black.

Fabric hanging roughly off of my left arm, photographed under "daylight" bulbs in the kitchen. It's a washed out orange, like Tupperware after you stored Bolognese sauce in it.
mastodon.ieJJ Celery (@jjcelery@mastodon.ie)Attached: 2 images While I'm waiting an absolute forever for the knit fabrics to dry, there's juuust enough space on the rack for one more coupon. I've decided to spend the evening dyeing the "apricot" Oxford. I just happen to have some Dylon machine dye and the process takes about 4h. I took a photo of the fabric before its first laundry. Look at it. What an absolute Bolognese Tupperware of colours. Then the store photo. Even had I ordered it on purpose, I would have been disappointed. #sewing #fabric

Fabric mystery. This is not what I thought it was. Like felt or cotton on one side, but the other side is really really slick. Synthetic?! (Decided it's probably not the appropriate fabric to try sewing shorts, unless I really want my shorts to slide off at random LOL)

Update: h/t @KentuckyConjurer this is probably sateen -- smooth and shiny on one side, textured on the other. Probably polyester.

Yesterday I finished the third of three texture-focused baby quilts. I made these using scraps from sewing projects, from remainders of others' projects, and even from older clothes where part of the fabric was in good condition

The center is a corduroy and silk pattern with actual quilting and the rest is just tied. I had so much fun finding a wide variety of textures to touch. (I really struggle with touching corduroy so I am v. glad this is wrapped) #quilt #reuse #fabric #textile #quilting

Continued thread

Even though I was disappointed with the poor durability of this modal #fabric, I still ended up buying more of it recently, for #sewing new t-shirts now that I’ve lost 65 lbs and nothing fits!

I spoke with the store owner about this fabric and showed him photos; he assured me this is common with modal fabric. Still, we both agreed that before they get to this point, they’re *super comfortable* to wear, which is why I bought more of the fabric. Expensive but worth it, I guess? @sewing@a.gup.pe @sewing@lemmy.world

The sack, rape, desecration and murder of #empire ...:

* The 1770 #Bengali famine, designed by the #EastIndiaCompany to destroy the local #cotton #fabric industry and invent a poisonous drug trade in its place.
* The looting and burning of the #OldSummerPalace near #Beijing, ordered by the same #Elgin who chopped up the #Parthenon.
* The destruction of the #Irish language through imperial policy, as dramatised in #BrianFriel 's #Translations (a magnificent and ambiguous play, describing linguistic polarisation, but not itself partisan).
* Labour #racism and engineered #alcoholism in #SouthAfrican #gold mines, from the 19th Century, with repercussions even until now - #ZamaZama mining is its modern evolution.

None of this is forgotten. Let it never be forgotten.

Can anyone recommend a place to buy:
- 100% cotton jersey fabric (no elastane or polyester!! I might consider blends with other natural fibres)
- In a range of nice earthy or neutral, solid colours
- Extra bonus points if the colours are marl/melange/heather
- For delivery to the UK (I am willing to pay for international shipping)
