mxlinux.orgMX Linux – Midweight Simple Stable Desktop OS
Continued thread

At this moment I'm roughly tuning a very nice FluxBox Desktop in an OpenSource POSIX driven OS.
I'm working on tuning my Desktops Environments in such a way that it doesn't matter whether I run them in Linux or *BSD

That way I'll just fire up the Operating System inject my own configuration for the desktop environment fire up X.org and then start working

FluxBox has been a favorite window / desktop manager of mine a couple of decades ago.

Since it has been written efficient it's blazingly fast
I combine tools that I love from Xfce with FluxBox so that my muscle memory for shortcuts can be used in a super smooth manner

Fair enough. #Screenshot attached. #Fluxbox with #emacs split paned and a few grouped windows. (Why don't other WM / DEs have this?)

Need to download and compile at least wmglobe.

Would love to redo the dock apps to be 128 px instead of 64. Of course, back in the day, 64 was almost too big.

Also, got my across-the-top conky reworked to be on the far left.

Now that the important stuff is taken care of, I should prolly do some work.

Okay, I admit, I gave up on #QTile and went back to #Fluxbox.

I promise, it is me, not qtile. My work flow just doesn't benefit from tiling, and I spent too much time trying to get it to act like Fluxbox. It isn't Fluxbox.

On the plus side, I learned a bit more python playing around with QTile and now know about rofi - a nice replacement for dmenu_run (which I had been using since forever, I think).

Still loving the 3440x1440 monitor, though. On #Gentoo #Linux, ofc.

got the 3440x1440 monitor set up yesterday. unwisely switched to it at the same time I switched from #Fluxbox to #QTile. Feeling the change stress.

But, got #Conky working; am getting used to the different layouts, and am enjoying the extra real estate. Need to tweak the fonts and some settings a bit, but feeling more okay with it than I was last night.

That said, anyone know how to set the N E S W margins individually? Tried a few ways; all errored out. Top conky = need bigger margin there.

My TTh #AdultESOL class finished Thursday. My SSu class finished today! I have two weekends off and have my TTh nights back (not doing that class again anytime soon - just too much during the regular #k12 school year).

So, of course, the first thing I did this afternoon was have #ChatGPT help me come up with #Mozilla #Firefox userChrome.js to make the keyboard shortcuts more like #emacs.

Also created a script to grab webcam frames for #conky to display (#fluxbox #linux) on the desktop.

Tell you what... #MXLinux #fluxbox is damn gorgeous.

32 bit never looked so good. Huge congrats to the MX team for making something that looks and feels this polished while still being light and minimal.

It's exactly what a simple system should look like IMHO

KDEConnect is a powerful piece of connection software. Even when you only bounce off the Android client with your Androids (plural) you will enjoy the program. I can see that a of lot coding time (not difficult for a seasoned programmer) and debugging effort (can be tedious if you have no alpha / beta testers) has been put into the code.

KDE Connect celebrated 10 years in 2023, now its 12, so quite mature for software. Esp opensource.

Problems connecting Linux (or any other) often mean that your distro maintainer did something unexpected (IMHO stupid) by enabling an fw pointing to your LAN (sick!) with all incoming ports blocked.

- Blocked ports on LANs DONT enhance security, and give flase sense of superiour security.
- Not stating that explicitly on the installer of the fw (default base install!) means searching to and fro, since the fw pointing local will be checked rudimentary to last, wasting brain cycles

The moment fw errors have been terminated (T2) your desktop client will work without a hitch, doing handshaking and later functions which you enable one by one.

Android client has accross the board an unfightable problem which is powermgmt regardless of flags put for 24/7 background operation. Esp cheap Xiaomis have that. The ones of EUR 175 (USD same) to EUR 1200, have less of that esp the near and full flagships.
Its unfightable untill you remove Android OS and replace with a flash on your phone.

Im having fun with Android client

TIL if you run gnome-terminal under Xorg it will default to always enabling GNOME's annoying Client-Side Decorations (aka header bar) instead of using the Window Manager's own window decorations. However, if you run the Window Manager under Wayland, even via the xwayland emulation layer, gnome-terminal is smart enough to realize it's not running under gnome-shell and disable it's silly Client-Side Decorations and not disable the Window Manager's window decorations.

re-emerged my #Gentoo [at]system, now finishing up the re-emerge [at]world. By finishing up, I mean about 200 of roughly 2200 packages remaining.

I switched to #KDE plasma profile, and just switched back to my regular, long-time #Fluxbox desktop.

So, wanted to redo everything (yes, I'm sure it wasn't absolutely necessary) for fun and to be sure all the correct use flags are applied or not.

Tried #KDE #Plasma5 for a week or so. Went back to #Fluxbox. KDE didn't do anything super special that I needed, and the inconveniences were not worth it. With the huge exception of KDE's lack of tabbed windows, it was little things, mostly.

For example, the weather widget wouldn't display the current temp. The Window List widget can't seem to sort by desktop or even by window name - I have 20 windows open on 8 desktops. Finding one manually was not ideal.

Back home to Fluxbox.

In #KDE #Plasma 5 now. Aside from the usual post-3 lost feature issues, it seems to hang for a few seconds randomly several times an hour. Not sure what is causing it, but it seems to maybe be related to disk IO? Like even #MuttEmailClient hangs loading a folder. Never seen this in #fluxbox

How do you stop the super / meta key from opening the application menu? I have many meta+key shortcuts set up, and if not fast enough, end up opening the menu. Very annoying.
