When a chef I trust pulled me aside to tell me about someone who's fighting the odds to start a hot sauce company, I took notice.

Jacob Wilkinson, who is visually impaired, turned a pandemic project into Blowing Smoke, featuring Ontario-grown produce with fantastic names like Devil’s Night and Yellow Snow.

Am so honoured he let me tell his story.

As Annie and Aretha sang, Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves. While men get most of the attention and almost all the investment funds, women are doing the work, founding, running and growing food production companies.

We’ve a few local female-founded companies who are stocking shop shelves across the province and country, and supplying restaurants. So, For International Women's Day, I chatted with a couple of them about their journeys:

Morgan from Green Goddess Fromagerie
Becky from Beck's Broth

Food traditions brought here are an important part of local food. Last week's food column about S Korean and Vietnamese Lunar New Year, and local restaurateurs talking about their traditions is a good example! You can listen to it here:

Oooh...it's chilly out there...which means it's time for chilli (peppers)! And garlic! And lemongrass! and...

My latest column is for those of us who like to put the fire in our bellies. It's all about spicy soups (and things that fit the soup niche): Tom Yum! Manchow! Rasam! Thukpa!

My pre-Thanksgiving food column for CBCKW is up!

I think of it as an "anytime you're having a crowd over column" tbh, but if you're still looking for veggie sides inspiration, Chefs Stephanie Soulis and Thompson Tran have some great ideas and tips!

It's Latin Heritage Month and to mark it, Chef Denis Hernandez of Casa de Sabor took me on a pantry shop for Salvadoran ingredients at Kitchener's Rincon Latino! Talked about it yesterday on-air. So, here's my CBCKW article.
