Some people cite J.R.R. Tolkien as the opposite of George R.R. Martin when it comes to finishing books. Which is funny if you actually know anything about Tolkien.

These people mistakenly think that Lord of the Rings is a trilogy just because it often gets printed in three volumes. LOTR is of course the sequel to The Hobbit and there were seventeen years between these publications.

The rest of Tolkien's Middle Earth books were published after his death, many in a series appropriately titled Unfinished Tales.

If you actually want an example of an author of a fantasy series with an impressive output then Robin Hobb should be on top of the list. Between 1995 and 2017 she published 16 books in her Realm of the Elderlings series.

TIL that George R. R. Martin has a miniature collecting web page that covers lead rot.

He summarized Bert Caldwell’s article in TOY SOLDIER AND MODEL FIGURE #13.
Causes; humidity and poor air circulation
Solution to stop it; 50/50 turpentine and mineral oil
I mixed some up and doused some recent eBay buys that had a light white dusting. Now I wait a week for them to dry and I'll try primer on them.

I learned to type on an actual typewriter. One of the things I got used to was putting two spaces after a period. I think I got rid of that habit in around 2009.

As I was reading George R.R. Martin's latest blog I got distracted by the number of spaces he uses after periods. He isn't satisfied with just one extra space like I was used to do. At one point he uses five spaces after a period and twice he has two spaces after a comma.

I wonder if he adds an extra space each time he stops to think about how to phrase the next sentence.

Well, “Sean” (@flyingwalruss.bsky.social) spotted this on #GRRM weblog and thinks that GRRM may have finished “Winds of Winter” (I assume “book 1”).

A reply to his post notes the _W_ords _O_f _W_isdom bit.

I’m gonna say I’m half amused/curious to see how different the ending is from the clusterfuck that was the TV show, which was so bad that it pretty much destroyed the entire cultural impact that GOT had achieved.

There are regular posts on #Reddit about whether #LLMs (so-called #AI) could generate the last (long delayed) two books of #GeorgeRRMartin's #ASongOfIceAndFire. It is a nonsense idea.

Once I wrote a reply outlying some of reasons this was impossible. These guessing machines have no understanding of plot, character, motivations etc. It simply makes no sense.

I got a reply from someone who claimed I was using "magic words". I checked their profile and they seemed mostly to be arguing about this subject. I think one if their sub-Reddits was called "Artist Hate" or something similar. They did not seem to be a reader +or an enjoyer of art in general).

There is a rumor going around regarding the longawaited sixth book in the #ASongOfIceAndFire, the original books that #GameIfThrones is based on.

The claim is that #GeorgeRRMartin (or an assistant) ordered a dragon shaped cake and casually mentioned that this was to celebrate the publication of the much delayed book.

I do believe that #GRRM might order a dragon cake. But...

a) there are numerous reasons he might do so
b) and I don't think it likely that he (or anyone close to him) would casually mention the new book.

When I was in London at the end of October I remember I was walking somewhere when I noticed someone who I thought looked quite a bit like #GeorgeRRMartin. I don't even remember when this happened. I just wrote it off as unlikely instead of staring at this person to see if it was actually him.

#GRRM just wrote an entry in his "Not a Blog" blog:

> We also got to spent Halloween in London.

The lesson might be that you should follow strangers in case they are actually a famous person you like.
