"Puriteens" - Just saw this term used by a prof in an online forum to describe young students (e.g., college freshmen) policing their teachers' speech and media choices--"You can't teach Huckleberry Finn because it has the N-word", "This book is inappropriate because of the casual sex and drug use", etc.

btw: The leadership entry fee for the Conservative Party of Canada when they elected Poillievre was $300,000 according to wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Con

Edit: a reply has mentioned they believe the last NDP leadership race fee may have been $30,000. This would be expected to rise.

[Edit: Just saw that OP is asking for responses from #BlackMastodon users only, so FYI]

This is some great thinking (I think, anyway), going beyond easy categorizations and "oh well" responses.

The fediverse is currently a certain shape and flavor. It could be a different shape and flavor--I think this is laudable and possibly even a moral imperative--but it won't get there with the way we currently do things (obviously?).

I don't know what changes need to be made, how big they need to be, or even whether the big ones are about fedi (vs. the outside world/context). It just feels like we have limitations and I'd prefer we work on that.

disabled.socialVayl Larkin (they/them) (@VaylLarkinPoet@disabled.social)I'm hearing some conflicting things about on-platform #Racism and I'm hoping to get a more comprehensive picture. Black Users Only: Why do you still use Mastodon? Would you recommend it to a Black friend and if so, are there resources to help them safely navigate? If you're on your way out, would you feel comfortable sharing where, so I can share? Mostly folks exiting Bsky Hesitant to ask for free labor and will not be offended if you choose to respond just with hashtags to follow. Thank you.

I've eventually learned that my adolescent desire to be special through uniqueness is not the only thing or always the best thing.

Being late to the game for a band or genre, or a movie or TV series, I don't get the same experience the early adopters did, but I get my experience and it is honestly pretty great, most of the time. As a researcher I find originality is overvalued; incremental improvement is most of research. As a songwriter I don't need myxolidian-mode traditional Azerbaijani folk throat singing with eight jazz chords to make a song I like.

That inb4 feeling is great, but so is not having to constantly chase it.
