Ika Makimaki<p>We watched <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/GodzillaMinusOne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GodzillaMinusOne</span></a>, (the Black and White version) and had a blast.</p><p>It's what it says in the can: A kaiju <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> doubling as a love letter to the original godzilla films, yes.</p><p>But it is also a heartbreaking, honest look at Japan after WW2, trying hard to get back on its feet and a visceral story of the people affected by the devastating war, coming together to help each other.</p><p>It's also interesting how it questions how cheap life became for the empire and tries to set that right. 8/10</p>

Artemis<p>My top two examples of how movies with tons of CGI in them (including giant monsters!) can look grounded and real would have to be <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/PacificRim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PacificRim</span></a> and <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/GodzillaMinusOne" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GodzillaMinusOne</span></a>.</p><p>It's not surprising that both directors started out working in visual effects.</p><p>I'm listening to the audio commentary on Pacific Rim; del Toro insists there is no such thing as "computer animation" because the artistry comes from the animators. Computers can do amazing things, but it takes people to tell the story with the art.</p>
