Laura Perry<p>The photo is blurry because I didn't want to get close enough to disturb the bird. This is one of our young red-tailed hawks on a fence across the street. The "teenage" birds often hunt from low branches and fences while they're learning. Sometimes they sit in our crabapple tree, waiting for a chipmunk to come out of its burrow. Swede’s Photographs<p>Watcher of the Woods</p><p>Here’s a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) I spotted some time ago while Charlie and I were out walking. I captured the image from quite a distance using my walkaround setup—a Canon 6D Mark II paired with a 100–400mm lens and a 1.4x extender, giving me an effective focal length of 560mm. We had an owl nesting in a palm tree a short distance from the house for several years.
Around nightfall, we'd sit in the yard, looking up to catch a glimpse of the silent flyer. Her babies were soooo loud.

She's gone now, but we have a hawk nearby with a youngster.
The mom is not interested in the chickens but hunts doves nesting the huge oak tree.
The young one is about a foot tall and keeps following her around, begging for food in its chirpy baby voice.
