After President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, her 12-year-old daughter asked if it was still safe to go to school.</p><p>"As immigration enforcement efforts have increased dramatically this year, many migrants have also reckoned with whether it’s safe to go to places of worship, whether they’re congregants or faith leaders like one Westbrook pastor detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month.</p><p>"In one of his first acts in office, Trump rescinded a policy that essentially barred <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ICEAgents" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ICEAgents</span></a> from making arrests at sensitive locations like <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/churches" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>churches</span></a>, <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hospitals" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hospitals</span></a> and <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/schools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>schools</span></a>. A coalition sued the Department of Homeland Security over the policy in February, arguing it violated <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ReligiousFreedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ReligiousFreedom</span></a>. A judge declined to block the policy, citing a lack of evidence that churches were 'singled out as special targets' for immigration enforcement.</p><p>"Faith leaders are preparing for the possibility of enforcement regardless, and several other lawsuits have been filed on similar grounds, including one in late July with a New England plaintiff.</p><p>"<a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MichelTshimankinda" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MichelTshimankinda</span></a>, a Westbrook man who founded a church in South Portland, has been in ICE detention in New Hampshire since Aug. 14, according to the Portland Press Herald. Someone then rolled up the back of the truck, and masked agents, including one in a cowboy hat, jumped out as people scattered, the witness said.<br> <br>"The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in an email that agents arrested 16 undocumented people from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua. Border patrol and DHS spokespeople did not respond to inquiries about the arrest tactics and whether agents had been targeting specific people.</p><p>"A spokesperson for Penske said in an email that it was aware of the videos, writing: 'Penske strictly prohibits the transportation of people in the cargo area of its vehicles under any circumstances. The company was not made aware that its trucks would be used in today’s operation and did not authorize this.' Just yesterday, U.S. District Judge Maame E. According to the nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice, it appears to run afoul of a congressional mandate to report how many transgender and other vulnerable people are being kept in immigration detention.</p><p>"The move has complicated advocates’ efforts to keep trans immigrants safe behind bars, where they face a heightened risk of violence and medical neglect.</p><p>" 'It’s part and parcel of a larger effort to really erase trans people,' said Bridget Crawford, the director of law and policy for the nonprofit advocacy group <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ImmigrationEquality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ImmigrationEquality</span></a>. Their Flight Landed in Africa. </p><p>An Intercept investigation shows that immigration officials deceived the men now expelled to <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SouthSudan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SouthSudan</span></a>.</p><p>Nick Turse<br>July 8 2025</p><p>"When eight men in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement boarded a plane in May, officials told them that they were being sent on a short trip from Texas to another ICE facility in Louisiana.</p><p>"Many hours later, the plane landed in Djibouti. The men were held in shipping containers for weeks, shackles on their legs. This past weekend, they were expelled to the violence-plagued nation of South Sudan.</p><p>"This deception, revealed by an Intercept investigation, highlights the lengths to which the U.S. government will go to further its anti-immigrant agenda and deport people to so-called third countries to which they have no connections.</p><p>"Lawyers for three of the men said that their clients were told, after resisting deportation to Africa, that they were instead being transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana. ICE then hustled them onto a plane, in the wee hours of the morning, and flew them out of the country without their knowledge or consent. This account was further corroborated by the wife of one of those same men who was told about ICE’s tactics in real time.</p><p>" 'This underscores just how abysmal and reprehensible the government’s treatment of these men has been from the very beginning, and the fact that the government made no genuine attempt to comply with the district court injunction in place prior to shipping them out of the United States,' said Glenda Aldana Madrid, a staff attorney at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project who is representing one of the men, Tuan Thanh Phan. </p><p>"Aldana Madrid added, 'Tuan and the other men had the right to know where they were going, and yet the government did not have the basic decency to do even that before putting them on a plane bound for a country none of them knew, and that is on the brink of civil war.' </p><p>"The Intercept sent numerous requests to ICE for comment. She was gardening in the yard of her New Orleans home when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers handcuffed and took her away, her family said. </p><p>"Kashanian arrived in 1978 on a student visa and applied for asylum, fearing retaliation for her father’s support of the U.S.-backed shah. She lost her bid, but she was allowed to remain with her husband and child if she checked in regularly with immigration officials, her husband and daughter said. She complied, once checking in from South Carolina during <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/HurricaneKatrina" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HurricaneKatrina</span></a>. But when President Donald Trump claimed on Monday that he has no tolerance for 'insurrectionists' who clash with police officers, he wasn’t talking about the 1,500 rioters he pardoned upon assuming office earlier this year; he was talking about people in Los Angeles, California, protesting his administration’s anti-immigration actions. </p><p>"Speaking to reporters outside of the White House on Monday, the president claimed that demonstrators opposing sweeping ICE raids in L.A. were 'professional agitators, they’re insurrectionists, they’re bad people,' and that 'they should be in jail.'<br> <br>"It’s clear that while there is public unrest in Los Angeles, the city is not in the throes of an active insurrection against the federal government — a claim Trump and his allies have repeatedly made since protests began on Friday. By 6pm local time, hundreds of people assembled around the federal building in downtown Los Angeles, where those taken into custody during the raids are being held.</p><p>"Earlier in the day, armed agents clad in heavy protective and tactical gear, including some who wore gas masks, could be seen on video and through aerial footage pushing individuals and trying to corral large groups that congregated to challenge the raids.</p><p>"Smoke grenades were reportedly thrown near the crowds and pepper spray was used as the federal officers attempted to clear the area. It’s frankly disgusting,' said coach Andrew Mainini.</p><p>"The high school junior was arrested when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulled over a car full of students, according to multiple reports. The boys were on their way to an early Saturday morning volleyball practice; Mainini told Boston.com he initially thought they overslept.</p><p>"But, one of the student athletes texted Mainini, letting him know that the driver of their carpool had been detained by federal agents. The coach learned more details from the students Sunday, who said that upwards of ten masked people, who appeared to be ICE agents, began questioning the three high schoolers and scanning their faces with cell phones on their way to practice.</p><p>" 'These are high school students. Afterwards, community members gathered to support the detained student at Milford Town Hall. The town, which is about 40 miles southwest of Boston, is nearly 30 percent foreign-born, according to census data.</p><p>"During Sunday’s demonstration, family members identified the detained student as 18-year-old <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MarceloGomes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MarceloGomes</span></a>, according to reports.
