This position is responsible for designing and developing inclusive learning materials for U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources Mission Area (WMA) staff and to conduct training. The USGS WMA Executive Council has developed a comprehensive Workforce Development and Training (WD&T) plan to support the staffing needs of a diverse workforce to more effectively face the water challenges of the nation. Implementing this plan requires key positions dedicated to establishing the governance, processes, and protocols to be used, and establishing new training requirements. A WMA Chief Learning Officer (CLO) is leading these efforts and requires staff to act as thought partners and who are dedicated to critical components of the plan. Where You Will Work: At UCAR, you will work alongside a dedicated team of professionals conducting critical research and community outreach to solve complex Earth system science problems including climate change, air pollution, extreme weather, floods, drought, wildfires, and space weather, all with the goal of improving human life and reducing economic loss. HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role. Key Responsibilities Collaborate with USGS staff, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and vendors to design, develop, and archive accessible and inclusive trainings (technical and non-technical) for diverse audiences in the USGS Water Resources Mission Area workforce. Assess and revise existing instructional materials for the USGS Water Resources Mission Area. Serve as a resource for SMEs and instructors on best practices for accessible learning. Work with the Design team and assist with coordinating communication between project leaders and WD&T on project needs, status, and obstacles. Work with the Design team to provide training in inclusive learning methodologies and best practices. Participate in team discussions and contribute to decision-making, workflows, and processes. Provide input on reports and give presentations as appropriate. Assist with the preparation of communication materials. Serve as a project leader for small projects under the guidance of the lead Educational Designer (including coordinating the work of other team members and setting project tasks and milestones). WHO WE’D LOVE TO JOIN OUR TEAM Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria: Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline (e.g. education, instructional design, or STEM field); 3 years of relevant experience; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired, but not required: Training experience in a federal environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of learning and education theories for students of diverse backgrounds. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a diverse workforce. Skill in developing performance objectives and assessments to determine the extent to which learners achieve desired performance including diverse students. Knowledge of STEM instructional materials design and development. Ability to adjust communication style and/or format to connect with a particular audience and context. Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in STEM. Strong prioritization and organizational skills, and flexibility to accommodate changing demands. Willingness to learn and the ability to travel (up to 2 - 3 domestic trips per year). Desired, but not required: Technical knowledge of water science (hydrology, groundwater, meteorology, ecohydrology, etc.). Skill in applying qualitative and quantitative methods for assessment and improvement of program effectiveness. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and technologies for creating and facilitating learning materials.
