IceWM - on Debian Linux - desktop tour
IceWM - on Debian Linux - desktop tour
IceWM 3.8 Window Manager Released with Faster Theme Loading

@ann3nova i think good old boring #debian!
they got the world's best package collection, which is essentially all you need -- just pick the right packages and voila it's a lite distro.
plus they don't look at the hardware support with business value optics, which means a lot of niche hardware works.
in the evening i put the serious computer aside and use a trash picked netbook with 2g of ram because it got no fan yet is not going to set my bed on fire. using #gnome -- it's not the hog it used to be. #icewm worked very well for me and works with much less ram yet.
the package manager is very good and takes a lot less memory than my usual dnf on fedora
Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix
You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.
It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.
P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).
I got #X11 running on the #PinephonePro under #FreeBSD ! Shown here running my favourite #icewm window manager. Super exciting! Now to get the touch screen working

IceWM 3.7 Window Manager Brings Enhanced Customization
—Linuxiac
「 On the fixes front, IceWM 3.7 addresses several longstanding quirks. One important tweak ensures the last event time is always used when setting window focus. At the same time, the fix for the desktop-focus glitch now prevents the user interface from getting stuck after undoing a “show the desktop” command 」

I mean, I totally get that if you only ever use gnome.
If you don't care to use Gnome because:
..and so you find yourself using #KDE, or #i3wm, or #sway, or heck, #jwm, #twm, #ctwm, #cwm, #icewm, or whatever...
...and you open a Gnome app. What do you get? An application that's integrated nicely with the rest of your system? Heck no! You get an app that sticks out like a sore thumb. Honestly, everything that happens within the application window is up to the devs, and I don't begrudge whatever style you use there. But taking over the titlebar I simply will not tolerate.
Honestly, if not for the CSDs, I'd never complain about Gnome. I'd use whatever (ethical) solution works best for my workflow and go about my day. But now using gnome apps feels like it's an advertisement for a cult-like mentality. I open Gnome Web, or Gnome Disks, Gnome Boxes, or whatnot, and boom, I'm lost. Where's my titlebar color? Gone. Which window is active? No blasted idea.
Sorry for the rant, I just really can't stand that. Other than that, I could say a lot of positive things about gnome. I'm glad they're there. But the mentality is feeling more cultish/corporate all the time.
Just published my new @tilvids video about IceWM, a minimal stacking window manager for Linux and BSD. I show you how to install, use and customize it.

Question for my #linux #i3 and #icewm users. 1st an intro to my question: I've been using #icewm on my #archlinux install for very long time. It's on a laptop but circumstances dictate I need to connect additional monitors that need to work independent from each. Meaning, I will need one to run videos while another is running script and another will be my main workspace. I need to see each one at all times. I used #i3 in the past and have a config but I want to stay with #icewm
