I have found a cheap old 7" Samsung tablet and I've managed to install a custom ROM. it is upgraded from Android 5 to 7.
Not terrible but it removed all bloat preinstalled apps and permitted to install #KOReader from f-droid.This soft is very good to transfer such devices to eBook reader.
I will wait before buying a #kobo

Today I successfuly jailbroke my Kindle ebook-reader and thus can use it for ebooks originating not from the big "A".

If you want to do the same I recommend this video for an overview:
youtube.com/watch?v=Qtk7ERwlIAk

And then these detailled instructions:
kindlemodding.org/

Last not least you may want to install this App on your computer to manage your ebooks in future:
calibre-ebook.com/

Saddly I did not find the option promoted in the video to setup my own screen saver (no important feature but would have been nice). And also the backing-up of the already purchased Amazon titles did not work. Appart from that everything looks quite promising now.

If you are the owner of a jailbroken #Kindle and you use #KUAL and #Koreader, it suddenly stopped working few days ago.

There is a fix at the mobile read forum by the developer of KUAL go to this page:
mobileread.com/forums/showthre

Download the file titled DevCerts-20250419-KeyStore.zip

Select the .bin file that matches your kindle generation (mine was k5) and using a usb cable copy it to the root folder. 1/2

Less than a week into my new #BOOX Note Air4, and I already don’t know how my life was before it.

This device is amazing. After years spent using old B&W notebooks and synchronizing them to SD cards, I have a notebook that runs a modern version of Android, and with a Notes app that actually supports WebDAV synchronization - which means that my notes will be available as PDF files on my Nextcloud instance as soon as I close them.

Since it runs Android pretty much without restrictions, I’ve also proceeded with installing F-Droid on it and Fennec, Element, my RSS app, Nextcloud Notes and ntfy.

Oh, and since it’s basically an Android tablet with a color e-ink screen and 6GB of RAM you could also watch videos on it (but again just because you can it doesn’t mean that you should).

And its AI features are also nice an unintrusive. Wrap some handwritten stuff in a square/rectangle, and it can easily be converted into text. Do a messy scribble on something, and anything underneath will be erased (although I still think that the double-sided pen/eraser gadget shipped with the Mobiscribe was more intuitive).

And this device really shines with the #KOReader app. It turns it into a powerful e-book reader, and with #Wallabag, RSS feeds and OPDS support (synchronized with my personal library running on #Ubooquity) you can’t ask for more.

Oh, and shall we talk about the ability to run SSH sessions on an e-ink tablet?

@michaelharley I have built an Amazon-free reading workflow that I love!

📱 E-reader: PocketBook Verse Pro

✨ App: KOReader is amazing. This lets me sync reading status between my e-reader and Android and Linux devices! The sync server can be self-hosted.

📤 Transferring books can happen wirelessly (I email to the e-reader) or with calibre since you don't mind the cable. The calibre Web server might work well for you, too.

🚀 Bonus: I use The StoryGraph and Hardcover.app to track reading progress instead of Goodreads (owned by Amazon)! KOReader has Hardcover integration! Hardcover has a GraphQL API!

🤭 Maybe I will finish the blog post I started about this!

Logging in to say how happy and grateful I am to be able to make annotations on #EPUB on my e-reader running #KOReader, and to then be able to import and read those same EPUBs and annotations on my laptop in @zotero

This allows me to read long-form (I really struggle to do so on my laptop) and still take digital notes (not having to manually copy afterwards.)
