A #WhiteHouse plot to axe international broadcasters #RadioFreeEurope / #RadioLiberty has been foiled after presidential advisor #KariLake was forced to rescind a letter cancelling the network’s grants.

It comes just a day after a judge temporarily halted an attempt by the #Trump administration to shut down the station, claiming it would “violate the #Constitution and federal laws.”

A federal judge has issued a restraining order against #KariLake & the #Trump admin barring the cancelation of funding for #RadioFreeEurope.

The decision to terminate, the judge says, appears to violate the #law & the intent of #Congress.

Congress has found that "it is the policy of the United States to promote the right of freedom of opinion and expression" and that "open communication of information and ideas among the peoples of the world contributes to international peace and stability." International Broadcasting Act of 1973, 87 Stat. at 457. RFE/RL has, for decades, operated as one of the organizations that Congress has statutorily designated to carry out this policy. The leadership of USAGM cannot, with one sentence of reasoning offering virtually no explanation, force RFE/RL to shut down even if the President has told them to do so.

The move follows #Trump signing an #ExecutiveOrder on Friday instructing #USAGM & six other little-known agencies to reduce their operations to the bare minimum mandated by the law, saying it was necessary to *shrink bureaucracy* [stop informing the public].

Trump, who clashed w/the #VoiceOfAmerica during his 1st term, picked fmr news anchor #KariLake to be its director for his 2nd term. Lake, a staunch Trump ally, has often accused *mainstream* #media of harboring anti-Trump bias.

Hobbs was elected Arizona Governor in 2022.

She won her election by 0.67%, or 17,117 votes.

Hobbs narrowly beat conspiracy theorist Kari Lake, who is a passionate promoter of the big lie that Donald Trump actually won the 2020 presidential election, but the election was stolen from him.

Hobbs (D) received 50.3% of the vote, and Lake (R) received 49.6%.
