"So What" is the first track on the 1959 album #KindOfBlue by American trumpeter #MilesDavis. It is one of the best-known examples of #modalJazz, set in the #DorianMode and consisting of 16 bars of D Dorian, followed by eight bars of E♭ Dorian and another eight of D Dorian. This #AABA structure puts it in the #thirtytwobarFormat of American popular song. The piano-and-bass introduction for the piece was written by #GilEvans for #BillEvans (no relation).

Chum reminded me that on this day, March 2nd, back in 1959, Miles Davis and Co started their first recording session for what would become Kind of Blue. One of my all-time favourite jazz albums, hell, one of my all-time favourite albums of any type.

Among the other musicians involved were the equally legendary John Coltrane and the brilliant Bill Evans. Blue gold...

For anyone who has never listened to a jazz recording, this piece of art (#KindOfBlue) is a sensation to the ears.

This album might be the best starting point to begin your journey into the world of jazz.

Some kind of inexplicable sorcery took place in this session, that even the players hadn't planned or expected. Lightning in a bottle, etc. #jazz #milesdavis

I don’t understand the dissing of #KindOfBlue on the 65th anniversary of its release. Is it the greatest jazz album of all time? IMHO nope but it did introduce countless people to jazz and probably still does. It was a commercial success which might have encouraged labels to put out jazz albums in the hopes of finding another KOB. Celebrate it for what it is and for what it contributed to a great American art form.

To a certain degree, I genuinely believe that owning Miles Davis's seminal album, 'Kind Of Blue', has become something of a cliché in any vinyl collection. Yeah, it is one of those albums. Yet, there is a reason why it is hailed by many as the greatest jazz album of all time, and one of the greatest albums across genres. Its direct and indirect influence has shaped generations of musicians from various musical traditions, also due in part to the remarkable ensemble Davis assembled at the time, featuring legends such as John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb, each contributing extraordinary musicianship. The best way to describe the essence of Davis's early works, particularly 'Kind Of Blue', is as something profoundly soothing, almost meditative, yet undeniably sophisticated with its modal harmonies. Ultimately, I am delighted to finally have this album in my vinyl collection (I only got it a few weeks ago), alongside my copy of 'Bitches Brew' from his electric period which might be my favourite Miles Davis album.

On this day in 1959 Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" was released which is regarded by many critics as jazz's greatest record, Davis's masterpiece, and one of the best albums of all time. Its influence on music, including jazz, rock, and classical genres, has led writers to also deem it one of the most influential albums ever recorded.

Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’ is, at 65, a shape-shifting album that transcends time and genre

"Miles’ playing had the quality of a human voice whispering to you."

"It is an album on which nuance, beauty & impeccably calibrated group improvisations trump the high-octane virtuosity & velocity that came to the fore with the bebop revolution that dominated jazz from the early 1940s to at least the mid-1950s."

Klassikko, mutta rahvaanomaisesti limited editionin värivinyylinä.

Levy soi noin hienosti että jälleen kerran koko vinyylilevyn toimintaperiaate tuntuu noituudelta. Pieni ura, iso ääni.

So... Yesterday I went out with the intention of buying a record player. I came home with one and 4 records to start my meager collection. I just set it up and it sounds great (although I have very little to go on). The first record I had to buy and therefore play was, of course Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis.

Once I get my own place set up, I'll be able to enjoy this and Jazz Geek out.
