It was windy, with patchy sun and cloud, and the odd short shower blown in. My sister, who works in peat bog management, was impressed with the apparent bog restoration in places. Tree planting going on (with flourishing woods planted 30-odd years ago), free-ranging native cattle doing their thing, and sphagnum moss and bilberry growing thick. </p><p><a href="https://thefolklore.cafe/tags/Walking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Walking</span></a> <a href="https://thefolklore.cafe/tags/WalkNorthumberland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WalkNorthumberland</span></a> <a href="https://thefolklore.cafe/tags/PeatBog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PeatBog</span></a><br><a href="https://thefolklore.cafe/tags/LandManagement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LandManagement</span></a></p>

Sunguramy :nb_lily:<p>It is warm enough now that the native pollinators have mostly woken from winter naps in dead stems of native plants. Time to do our high-mow, which will somewhat imitate a burn, promoting the native grasses &amp; plants while knocking down some of the non natives that start faster. We have a good bit of broomsedge and purpletop tridens starting to take over. I also do chemically treat for stiltgrass, which seems to knock it down and let native stuff encroach where it had strongholds. </p><p>This was a fescue planted field, which, for the area, is kinda least of the evils. As you can see though, just one season of this method and the native broomsedge really took hold! We also got a huge section of goldenrod, so I'm really looking forward to it this Autumn!</p><p>A high mow timed like this is a trick from a local naturalist &amp; plant expert, and is great for people scared to do control burns, or who cannot do them.</p><p><a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/nativeplants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nativeplants</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/nativespecies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nativespecies</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/ecosystem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ecosystem</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/invasives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>invasives</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/landmanagement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>landmanagement</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a></p>
