Flipboard Culture Desk<p>Around half of the world's 7,000 languages are expected to be extinct by the end of this century. Five Books spoke to author Samantha Ellis about why this matters, and got five book recommendations from her on the subject. "With language go stories. Yes, you can translate those stories and tell them in a different language, but there is often something vibrant lost. With a language goes a sort of vibe, a style, a mode of speaking. So I do think it quite devastating that so many languages will be lost," she says.</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/JT3glM" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/JT3glM</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Language</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Linguistics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linguistics</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/EndangeredLanguages" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EndangeredLanguages</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>

Elias Mårtenson<p>So, if I'm getting the etymology right, the Swedish word "lov" which means "permission", also means "school vacation" because you are permitted to be away from school. This is similar to the English expression "leave of absence".</p><p>The Norwegian word "lov" (Swedish "lag") means "law". These words also seem related.</p><p>Now, the Swedish word "lova" meaning "promise" clearly has the same root. These words are all about committing to some kind of promise.</p><p>It would also appear that the word "belief" is related to the word "leave". This appears to be a west germanic construction, given that the German word "glauben" seems related.</p><p>In Swedish (which is a north germanic language) the word for belief is "tro". This word is ancient, and is supposedly related to "trä" meaning "wood". It refers to something that is strong.</p><p><a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/estymology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>estymology</span></a> <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/swedish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>swedish</span></a> <a href="https://functional.cafe/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>language</span></a></p>
