Albemarle says #Chile #lithium plant operating normally after incident last week

By Reuters
August 12, 2025

SANTIAGO, Aug 12 (Reuters) - #LaNegra lithium processing plant in Chile is operating normally after an 'incident' last week, the company told Reuters on Tuesday, after a local lawmaker said authorities had opened an investigation.
There were no injuries and sales of the metal used to make #LithiumIon batteries are not expected to be affected, #Albemarle said, without providing additional details.

"It was not immediately clear if operations had temporarily shut down last week. Albemarle gave no more details of the incident.

"Jaime Araya, who represents the #Antofagasta region where the plant is located in the Chilean Congress' lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, last week sent a letter to Chile's mining regulator and labor office requesting an inspection of the site after receiving a complaint that a pipe containing acid had burst.

"Araya on Tuesday told Reuters he was informed that the labor inspector’s office had opened an investigation.

"A source familiar with Albemarle's operations said such probes are standard procedure and that the plant is operating normally. A second source added that the problem affected only one tank.

"A union leader for plant workers, Elias Torres, said he could not comment because an investigation was underway.
The labor inspector's office said it could not provide information because the matter was under review.

"Albemarle's shares were down slightly in Tuesday midday trading to $80.14.
Charlotte, North Carolina-based Albemarle on Monday said its Chief Operating Officer #NethaJohnson will leave the company as part of a management reorganization. Johnson's exit is not connected to the Chilean incident, a source told Reuters."

@LunaDragofelis @CStamp or even better:

#Methanol which allows for a higher energy density without necessitating high-pressure tanks and systems (which in case of a fire can detonate like a pipe bomb)....

  • Also since Methanol is common in nature, it's easily metabolized by microorganisms (so is less of an issue than traditional gasoline) and it burns clean at cold temperatures.

And thus #FuelCell technology with #Methanol allows for the swiftness of #refueling with the cleanness of #electric propulsion whilst saving a lot in deadweight compromised mostly of conflict minerals like #cobalt and #Lithium.

NatureLithium deficiency and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease - NatureLithium has an essential role in the brain and is deficient early in Alzheimer’s disease, which can be recapitulated in mice and treated with a novel lithium salt that restores the physiological level.

'Breakthrough study finds deficiency of this common nutrient could contribute to Alzheimer’s'

"Scientists from Harvard Medical School found that lithium loss in the human brain is one of the earliest changes leading to Alzheimer’s, while in mice, a similar lithium depletion accelerated memory decline."

"Researchers also showed that a new type of lithium compound – lithium orotate – can avoid capture by amyloid plaques and restore memory in mice."

"The latest findings with lithium orotate, however, needs to be confirmed in humans via clinical trials."

“ The work, published Wednesday in Nature, shows for the first time that lithium occurs naturally in the brain, shields it from neurodegeneration, and maintains the normal function of all major brain cell types. The findings — 10 years in the making — are based on a series of experiments in mice and on analyses of human brain tissue and blood samples from individuals in various stages of cognitive health.

The scientists found that lithium loss in the human brain is one of the earliest changes leading to Alzheimer’s, while in mice, similar lithium depletion accelerated brain pathology and memory decline. The team further found that reduced lithium levels stemmed from binding to amyloid plaques and impaired uptake in the brain. In a final set of experiments, the team found that a novel lithium compound that avoids capture by amyloid plaques restored memory in mice.”

Harvard Gazette · Could lithium explain — and treat — Alzheimer’s?By Stephanie Dutchen

Neuroscientists analyzed the brain tissue of people with Alzheimer’s disease and found that the sticky plaques of amyloid protein that are a hallmark of the disease had high concentrations of lithium, while it was depleted in the rest of the brain. The researchers hypothesized that lithium naturally exists in our bodies as part of a carefully calibrated ecosystem of metal ions. In Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid plaques sequester this freely available lithium, preventing it from being used in various neural processes. This process could lead to downstream symptoms of Alzheimer’s, like memory loss and cognitive decline.

Researchers then identified a compound called lithium orotate that can bolster natural levels of lithium without getting trapped by amyloid plaques. In studies of adult mice engineered to have Alzheimer’s-like symptoms, adding a low dose of lithium orotate to their drinking water prevented the development of plaques and completely reversed memory loss in mice. “It seems to somehow turn back the clock,” the paper’s senior author, Bruce Yankner, told The Boston Globe.

Scientists hope that this paper will breathe new life into the search for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and open up new questions about the role of lithium in the brain. “[Lithium] powers our phones, laptops, and electric vehicles,” Yankner tells Science. “My guess is the brain might have utilized this unique electrochemistry before we did.” #alzheimers #lithium #neuroscience #medicine

Researchers led by Bruce A.
