I recently discovered that a carpet heiress from #AmsterdamNY, world traveler and trophy hunter, was captured by the #Nazi German army when she "wandered" too close to the front in the closing months of #wwii I summarized her story on my local history blog, which contains links to her autobiography with much more detail. Her capture was widely noted in the local press, and then she was not mentioned again until she was freed. #history #LocalHistory #histodons

Pencil or charcoal portrait of Gertrude Sanford Legendre, an heiress from an Amsterdam, New York, carpet-making family who, while working for the Office of Strategic Services, was captured by the German Army in November 1944. This portrait was drawn by one of her German prison guards, identified as Tony May. The drawing shows a woman with somewhat mussy, curly hair parted at the left side and not reaching her collar. He eyes are large and expressive, her eyebrows arched high, Her face narrows, with a strong downward turned nose, notable cheekbones, and pursed lips. Beneath, the outlines of a women's service uniform are suggested but not filled in, with jacket, collar and tie. Her look is one of strength and determination.

Associated Press: "IMLS was established in 1996 by a Republican-led Congress and has a mission to “advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.” The institute combined the services of previous government agencies, including the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science and the Institute of Museum Services.

"It distributes thousands of grants nationwide, totaling in recent years to more than $200 million annually."

So the people wielding the chainsaws in Washington DC seem to think that nobody will miss the #IMLS. Such a piddly amount of money!

Maybe they don't read. Or watch video. Or have young children. Or do research. Or want to see historical photos and newspapers. Or visit museums. Or read.

After some explaining of copyright and licensing, I finally got the field names for the townland of Ballyreddy in Co. Kilkenny from the person who had surveyed them years ago, including some name:etymology. I especially love the Snipe Bog, named after the bird, and the Watery Lane which I only got after following up with him, bc the field is called "Watery Lane Field". It's great to have them as #opendata and accessible now. 😇 #openstreetmap #logainm #localhistory

The day this immigrant first discovered chokos.

"The humble choko is often seen as nothing more than a creeping wild vine across Australian backyards, sheds and neighbourhoods, but this fruit has a long and travelled history.

Originating in Mexico, where it was a staple food for the Aztecs and other indigenous societies, the choko travelled from Central America to Europe during the Columbian exchange in the 16th century. From there, it traversed Asia and, finally, came to Australia.

... While it’s better known in Chinese cuisine as a staple vegetable with various cooking methods, the history of its culinary use in Australia is far different.

... Chokos in Australia were known as a ’filler’ for low-income families during the Great Depression. Given the choko's ability to grow wild and yield plenty of crops, it was seen as a free backyard source of fibre and nutrition. I can understand why some people can’t touch choko if they ate it a lot in their younger years and got sick of it – I’m not sure I would want to eat it a couple of times a week." Thomas H. Sands Pennington was one of the first Black pharmacists, and practiced his trade for many years in Saratoga Springs. The adopted son of the remarkable James W.C. Pennington, he was a pharmacist in #Albany before serving in the Civil War. He started in Saratoga in 1867.
