Curiosity Meets Science – Girls’ Day 2025 at #MPL & #MPZPM

We recently welcomed 30 curious girls to explore #physics, light, and #medicine at our institutions. They discovered the daily work of physicists, lab engineers, mechanics, and IT’s role in #research. With countless questions they explored labs and workshops. We hope to inspire future #science and #technology enthusiasts!

#QuantumCommunication: SE3 experiments launched

The #QuNET initiative’s SE3 experiments have begun. A research aircraft sends single photons to an ion trap at #MPL labs, involving @DLR, @Fraunhofer_IOF, and @FraunhoferHHI. The aircraft circles MPL, sending photons to a ground station telescope. Funded by the @bmbf_bund, QuNET is creating secure IT networks to counter future cyber attacks. This groundbreaking work paves the way for resilient quantum technologies.

Girls’ Day 2025 – We’re excited to welcome you!

Today, we welcome girls interested in #science to #MPL and #MPZPM! They will experiment and explore how female researchers advance science. In workshops, IT & service, they’ll also learn how women contribute to top-level #research.

Girls' Day helps girls discover careers where women make up less than 40%—and meet inspiring role models!

At #MPL researchers investigate the generation of photon pairs with wide spectral separation, employing photonic-crystal fibers filled with noble gases. The picture shows an experimental setup featuring a hollow-core fiber. The use of those offers a significant advantage over conventional silica fibers due to the characteristics of the pulsed laser: It considerably reduces chromatic dispersion.

Researcher Up Close: Dr. Cornelia Holler at Girls’ Day 2025!

One researcher participating in our #GirlsDay is Dr. Cornelia Holler. She uses the method “μkiss” to precisely apply biological materials to individual cells. Her passion for #science began in school, leading her to #research biophysics at #MPL. By joining Girls’ Day, she hopes to inspire girls: “There are no biological reasons preventing women from succeeding in science — we just need to do it!”

#GirlsDay 2025 at #MPL and #MPZPM – Experiencing science up close!

On April 3rd, female students explore the fascinating worlds of the science of light and the interface of #physics and #medicine at our institutes.
What awaits them: exciting experiments, insights into #research & #technology, lab tours & workshop visits.
Our goal? Inspiring more girls for #science! Physics, technology, and research offer diverse and exciting career opportunities.

The Importance of Girls' Day for the Future of Science!

Girls' Day is a valuable opportunity to inspire girls to explore #science and technology. As a #research institute, we show them that women play a vital role in science. Through hands-on experiences and interaction with female researchers, we break down stereotypes and spark curiosity—because diversity in research drives innovation!

Diversity makes us stronger – Women at MPL in all fields!

On International Women’s Day (#IWD2025) tomorrow, we celebrate the incredible women at #MPL. 35% of our staff, including scientists, our head of administration, and department heads, are women. Programs like the Lise-Meitner Excellence Program and Minerva Fast Track support their careers. The Max Planck Society aims for 54.5% women in leadership positions.

Let’s celebrate successes and keep fighting for equality!

The #MPL is taking an important step in fostering #science and networking: With today’s founding of the “Verein der Freunde und Ehemaligen des Max-Planck-Instituts für die Physik des Lichts e. V.”, we are creating a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange between science and the public. The association will:

✅ Strengthen #research collaboration and exchange

✅ Organize networking events

✅ Inspire the public with science
We look forward to the next steps!

#Carnival at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light – who should not be missing? #MaxPlanck himself! Our costumed version of the famous physicist met the bust of the original. A delightful reminder of his lasting scientific influence.
It’s inspiring to see how our young #MPL scientists identify with the spirit of the @maxplanckgesellschaft – combining curiosity, creativity, and passion for #research. We are proud to foster an environment where #science and enthusiasm go hand in hand!

At #MPL, researchers explore questions at the interface of ›non-hermitian physics‹ and ›topology‹. The image shows the energies of a 2D lattice as toroidal surfaces above the Brillouin zone. Due to the non-Hermiticity of the underlying model, these surfaces may be glued together at so-called branch cuts. On the torus, the branch cuts can form non-contractible loops.

Structures like these are highly robust against perturbations.

GIRLS' DAY 2025 – We’re in!

What does a scientist’s daily life look like? What role do mechanics play in #research? And how is #physics connected to #medicine?

On April 3rd, girls from 5th grade onwards can explore these questions at #MPL and #MPZPM, experiencing #science firsthand through experiments!

Our goal? To inspire more girls to pursue physics and show them that #science is not only exciting but full of future opportunities!

I feel the #EUPL is missing a requirement which #MPL has:

"You must "additionally distribute" under (L)GPL. In other words, you must make the MPL-licensed source code available to your recipients under both MPL and (L)GPL. Someone downstream from your recipients can then take under (L)GPL-only or MPL-only. "

@brembs #Wisconsin was rich in #German nomenclature right up until everyone associated the #dialect with #krauts (those #nazis over there)

Then everyone said: Nope, I'm #Polish just to avoid being kicked in the teeth.
