Evan Genest
Went to a very small theater, the Evjue Stage at Bartell, Madison WI, a small chapel of a space, with ~80 seats.. Didn't know what to expect from the Mercury Players Hamlet. Turned out to be excellent!

Hamlet's timing vis-a-vis Guildenstern/Rosencrantz was awesome. So was Hamlet viz Polonious: ("Words, words, words...") I loved their mutual aggression when they locked eyes, inches from each other, and went through the clouds-shaped-like-camels routine, playing it as a violent exchange.

These three were among the best I have ever seen:
Polonious: Travis Bedard
Hamlet: Stacey A. Garbarski
Claudius: Bryan Metrish

The director edited the script nicely to resize King Claudius to a smaller part of the story. I loved the staging of "To be or not to be soliloquey as a freeze frame, delivered by Horation (Brent Holmes). Horatio's student-costume was nice, as was Claudius' well fitted rich-guy suit.

Great work by Sean Langenecker as the guard in scene 1, and the traveling tragedian.

Still playing, through next weekend, $25.

#hamlet #shakespeare #madisonwi
