A magpie has been watching the smaller birds feed and has decided that it too would like to try some buggy-bites. Needless to say, it likes them and has become a regular visitor to our garden. Just as long as it does not decide to try the Robin and blackbird hatchlings as well. I suspect it may resort to coercion - “give me buggy-bites, otherwise the kids get eaten!” #birds #aves #magpie

On days when I need to bring the box in early, I try to at least wait until there is a significant gap between visits, and as close to 1900 as I can. Today, 2 hours after the last visit, and seconds after I had brought it inside(and still putting it away), this magpie swooped in, noticed a lack of box, gave me a brief glare, and then jumped to the ground, walking off into the distance.

An old world bird I miss in Texas is the magpie.

As far as I know, the grackle has none of the magpie's associations with omens and rhymes, so is but a dull substitute.

Perhaps I'm just having a moment of homesickness...
