"we have a real opportunity right now to move the conversation along. It’s clear from the response to the Treaty Principles bill that 100s of 1000s of people across Aotearoa are ready for a constructive, principled discussion about Te Tiriti & its role in our constitution. It seems to me that we are more ready than ever to explore the potential of constitutional transformation & take up the vision of Matike Mai Aotearoa."
How might constitutional change work in practice?
In the final part of our E-Tangata series examining the work of Matike Mai Aotearoa, Carwyn Jones discusses the models that describe how change could be enacted.

(2) Report of Matike Mai Aotearoa – The Independent Working Group on Constitutional Transformation — This report is the result of 252 hui between 2012 and 2015:
an astute essay that every pākehā New Zealander should read (by Sarah Hopkinson for E-Tangata): https://e-tangata.co.nz/reflections/befriending-our-wild-disagreements/
"James Baldwin wrote: “We can disagree and still love each other, unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression.”"
"This Report synthesises those views and acknowledges both the complexity of the issues our people were asked to address and the insights which they brought to the whole kaupapa. It also recognises, as our people did, that there will be opposition to the ideas presented and that more work needs to be done. This Report should be read as part of an ongoing dialogue into the future."

I had the opportunity to participate in a Te Tiriti workshop. It was great, I highly recommend doing one.
One of the best things I learned was about #MatikeMai, a project to build a decolonised constitutional framework for #Aotearoa centering Te Tiriti, people, and planet.
When all we get is the old patriarchal white neoliberal worldview, things can feel bleak.
But there's work on a transformative, inclusive, loving kaupapa underway.
Check it out.
An excellent article about the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi moving forward: https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/02/05/te-tiriti-should-inspire-hope-not-fear/
PhD baby! Got accepted in the PhD programme at University of Auckland with doctoral scholarship
Honoured to have my heroes as my future supervisors. Excited to be working in the realm of Te Tiriti, He Whakaputanga, and Matike Mai based constitutional transformation.
