The #UnitedStates was added to the CIVICUS Monitor #Watchlist due to concerns about declining #CivilLiberties, particularly under the #Trump Administration. #CIVICUS, a global alliance of civil society groups, cited actions such as: cuts to #ForeignAid; crackdowns on #diversity initiatives; attempts to restrict #MediaFreedom or the #FreePress; and threats to #dissent. The #WhiteHouse has rejected this assessment, asserting that President Trump is leading the most transparent administration in history.

"Stefania Maurizi is a journalist who worked with Wikileaks as a media partner and Glenn Greenwald on the Edward Snowden revelations. She’s also the author of Secret Power: Wikileaks and Its Enemies.

She sat down with Richard Hames to explain how Wikileaks achieved so much, how the state tried to destroy them, and how they fought back and won."

These legal threats - known as SLAPPs - have been used to silence those uncovering the Post Office Horizon scandal, reporting on sexual harassment allegations against the owner of Harrods, and even covering the war in Ukraine.
