The #federal #minimumwage is officially a #poverty wage in #2025
When the minimum wage was created as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938, the policy was intended to protect the nation from “the evils and dangers resulting from #wages too low to buy the bare necessities of life.” The last time Congress increased the federal minimum wage was in July 2009, meaning that as prices have risen over the last 15 years, the value of the minimum #wage has fallen by 30%.

Economic Policy InstituteThe federal minimum wage is officially a poverty wage in 2025In 2025, the federal minimum wage is officially a “poverty wage.” The annual earnings of a single adult working full-time, year-round at $7.25 an hour now fall below the poverty threshold of $15,650 (established by the Department of Health and Human Services guidelines). It’s my goal to enjoy seeing New Hampshire restaurants close. Let me tell you why.

In 2020 they all took massive PPP loans, even the ones that had extensive outdoor seating and volleyball courts and the whole deal. Makris lobster & steakhouse took 2 PPP loans even though they have extensive outdoor seat. Jimmy’s x wife took a trip to Greece as soon as the world reopened.

Then Biden won the election, and a bunch of restaurant owners lobbied our state government to pass a new law that says if federal minimum wage goes up tipped employees will not get a raise. They did.

In New Hampshire servers are paid $3.26 an hour. A lot of the chain restaurants pay some of the kitchen staff, like the expo, $4 or $5 an hour because they call them a tipped employee.

They make the servers tip them out based on sales. (Which is why it’s awful to stiff servers even if you believe their boss should be paying them. Just don’t go to restaurants. You are punching down if you are making the server pay to wait on you to prove a point to their boss by letting their boss enjoy the profits from your visit.)

Then I saw a story after story of wage theft from the restaurants that stayed open during the pandemic, they were stealing tips from employees or just not paying them at all.

Checkmate Pizza is the only one I specifically remember because I used to order from them for lunch at work until they did the wage theft and then I stopped forever.

Plus, Kkkaroline Leavitt bragged on Facebook in 2020 about how she was eating in local restaurants the entire time she was contagious with Covid to “support”.

Nah. Cry more.
