Jeff Smith<p>Murakami Haruki wrote a book called “Underground” about the people who were impacted by this. The long term physical and mental health effects are so sad. Japanese society didn’t treat the victims well.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/aumshinrikyo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aumshinrikyo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/sarin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sarin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/SarinGasAttack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SarinGasAttack</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a></p>
Jeff Smith<p>Summer Fishing in Lapland by Juhani Karila</p><p>Chose this book after browsing the shelves at the local library. Been so long since I’ve done that.</p><p>Haruki Murakami meets Lapland is my overall impression. Not that the author is mimicking Murakami but the over-the-shoulder, we are experiencing things as they happen, style of writing and whimsy- ala Harboiled Wonderland, A Wild Sheep Chase or Windup Bird Chronicle.</p><p>So happy I stumbled across this book.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/JuhaniKarila" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JuhaniKarila</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Lapland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lapland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>
Jeff Smith<p>Sometimes I’m astonished how much my early adulthood was influenced by Sakamoto and also by Murakami Haruki. Fresh out out university, moved to a new country - maybe not so surprising. But the soundtrack of Sakamoto and the script of Murakami still influences and reflects who I am today. </p><p>And, damn, Coda is an amazing documentary </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/SakamotoRyuichi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SakamotoRyuichi</span></a></p>

Jeff Smith<p>Reading Murakami Haruki’s first book “Hear the Wind Sing” and for some reason suddenly thought of al fresco dining in Japan. I remember multiple people in Japan in the early 90s trying to tell me that Japanese people don’t like eating outdoors. Yet they sit outside, drink, eat and sing under the cherry trees, and rooftop beer gardens were all the rage. But a café with outdoor seating was an anomaly. Go figure </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/japan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>japan</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Alfresco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Alfresco</span></a></p>
Jeff Smith<p>Finally reading Murakami Haruki “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki” after many years of having bought the book. As always an uncanny style of writing like you are actually watching a person’s life and a pace that I’ve always thought of as a “walking style”. Can’t really ever explain it but it has a stride that just feels comfortable. Maybe it comes from his running. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Murakami" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Murakami</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a></p>

It’s based on the psychological condition known as night paralysis, which inordinately affects Japanese people. Waking up at night, paralysed, unable to move, yet subjected to unimaginable horrors. <br>Good stuff! <br><a href="https://lounge.town/tags/HarukiMurakami" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HarukiMurakami</span></a> <br><a href="https://lounge.town/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a> <br><a href="https://lounge.town/tags/novelists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novelists</span></a>.<a href="https://lounge.town/tags/ShortStories" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ShortStories</span></a></p>
Phooz<p>I am starting a book that i had been reading years ago. Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. </p><p>"Without wind to move the branches, the shadows looked like permanent stains, destined to remain imprinted on the pavement forever." </p><p>This time around, I find I have a better appreciation of the book having been to Japan. </p><p>What are you reading? 🤓 </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/MurakamiHaruki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MurakamiHaruki</span></a></p>
