Tesla's Robotaxis Are Going Poorly

A first public test of robotaxis by Tesla in Austin, Texas led to multiple traffic problems and driving issues, videos from company-selected riders showed over the first few days.

The NHTSA already confirmed this week that it's looking at the robotaxi rollout.

"The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is gathering additional information from Tesla and will take necessary actions to protect road safety following an assessment of the reports and other relevant information.
US auto safety regulators are looking into incidents where Tesla Inc.’s self-driving robotaxis appeared to violate traffic laws during the company’s first day offering paid rides in Austin.

"#Robotaxi has already been spotted making several significant mistakes over its first day of commercial operations, including driving in the wrong lane with incoming traffic and dropping passengers in the middle of an intersection." Maybe that's why #Tesla wants its answers to #NHTSA's questions kept secret. electrek.co/2025/06/23/tesla-a

Job cuts at the US traffic safety #regulator instigated by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency disproportionately hit staff assessing self-driving risks, hampering oversight of technology on which the world’s richest man has staked the future of Tesla.

"Elon Musk is eliminating jobs at the vehicle safety agency that oversees Tesla and has launched investigations into deadly crashes involving his company’s cars.

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has cut a 'modest' amount of positions, according to a statement from the agency.

"In addition to investigations into Tesla’s partially automated vehicles, NHTSA has mandated that Tesla and other automakers using self-driving technology report crash data on vehicles, a requirement that Tesla has criticized and that watchdogs fear could be eliminated.

"The staff reductions have come through a combination of firings, buyouts and layoffs."

Tesla Tops Fatal Accident Rates In New Study

Misleading labels like “Full-Self Driving,” touchscreen-centric controls and driver complacency have raised growing concern over safety.

Tesla Model Y has a fatal accident rate of more than three times the average car over a billion miles driven. The Model S is twice more likely to result in a fatal crash than the average car.
