lianna
Hot take about one thought process that makes me sceptical of psychiatry and psychotherapy as a whole:

Your average psychiatrist's or psychotherapist's university education has been over a decade ago, often several.

First of all, all that knowledge is now horribly outdated, especially concerning only recently properly researched traits like autism or ADHD, but that's not the whole problem.

My own university experience also taught me that most students (sometimes including myself) just study to pass the next exam without really understanding or keeping most of what they're reading. Flawed science on the level of a school project is often still given a passing grade, especially to Bachelor's students.

That's all still assuming that your average psychiatrist or psychotherapist really even remembers most of their formal education! Who really remembers what they learned in school 20 years ago?

Most of them are just coasting along with Google and their "life experience", aka personal biases and heuristics. Your average psychiatrist or therapist is not sitting there studying new papers and reading up on cutting-edge neurodivergency findings after-hours. They'll just make assumptions.

If you add to all this the fact that most doctors and therapists are middle-class or upper-class middle-of-the-road centrists, liberals and conservatives with a traditional picture-book cishet spouse, kids, house and family dog... what can they really tell me about my very much different life?

Their only experience with trans people for example will usually at best be the textbook idea of "person born in the wrong body". They at best only know archetypal binary transsexual women and transsexual men and how to treat them.

What could they possibly have to tell me about my detransition experience or liminal experiences with my gender fluidity? Their entire idea of a trans woman is "man who feels like a woman, wants to live and pass as a woman and therefore needs medicine and social support to be happy." While that is even the best outcome, it doesn't even encompass the whole topic in the slightest.

The only thing that most of them are good for is prescribing medicine and bog-standard problems like burnout or depression.

The only psychiatrist or therapist I would trust is one who is still actively participating in the scientific community.

The decoupling of medical practice from medical theory has devastating effects. As much as it is unfeasible with the shortages we already have, there should simply be no practising doctors who aren't also constantly learning and up-to-date on scientific findings.

#psychiatry #mentalHealth #MH #psychotherapy #therapy #health #neurodivergency #ND #university #science #medicine #autism #ADHD #trans #queer #academia

Yoram Blumenberg
Sometimes I knew musical artists and their work for years, even decades, before I discover them with a passion and intensity that my senses jump up and down and I'm electrified.

That's when the music crosses a threshold and becomes #stimming.

And yes, it is relevant for me to set this in a #AuDHD context. Becoming aware of my #neurodivergency and my needs is part of understanding myself and practice self-care.

Today I «discovered» … Tool and their 2019 album «Fear Inoculum».

And now I'm good because my mind is drumming and jumping and smiling. Thank you #Tool.

olena
Seeing a lot of posts lately talking about parents not telling their kids about their #autism or #ADHD diagnosis. The thing is, it’s not only with #neurodivergency, the trend is much wider.

I went to rheumatologist recently because of joint pain. Mentioned that to my mom, and she’s like “Oh, you’ve been a frequent visitor of a rheumatologist when you were kid because of heart murmurs and some other things, until we moved and changed the clinic”.
I’m over forty. I have an adult kid who suffers joint pain. I have been diagnosed with valve insufficiency just a few years ago, and knowing that I had heart murmurs could have helped with my diagnosis.
Why am I only being told about these things now? How much more medical information I don’t have about myself?

I know, many people are opposed to the idea of some universal health info system because of privacy issues and the fear that the state or corporations being able to use it against them. But I feel that it’s incorrect approach.
We need to develop mechanisms against misuse of our data, but there should be some way for us ourselves to be able to access the info about our health.
It’s so fucked up that there are numerous people around us - parents, school personal, doctors, nurses - who have the info about us, about our mental and physical health, that we have no idea about, and that is left for their(!) judgment what to give us and what not.
It strikes me as absolutely absurd when I see doctors or some “patient’s rights groups” saying sone info should not be shown to people because they can “misinterpret” it. WTH? As long as I am legally considered mentally capable to take my own decisions: to vote, to manage my property, etc - I should be entitled to any info on me, and should be given indisputable right to make my own decisions based on that. No one should take decisions concerning my health on my regard.
I don’t understand why people in general are ok with that. It scares me actually to see how widely acceptable that is in the society.

olena
Years ago, I’ve seen a phrase saying that some people always remember that “I am not like others”, but always forget that “Others are not like me”.

For #neuroqueer me, the first one is because, well, the society just doesn’t let me forget: I am always reminded that I am weird, wrong, not adequate, not appropriate etc
The second one, I suppose, is firstly because of exposure: #neurodivergency usually runs in the family - plus it’s more likely to be surrounded by somewhat relatable people, so #neurodivergent traits are seen as more common, and, secondly, because of innate human trait to see oneself as a baseline, to measure the world in relation to ourselves.

For me, that second thing makes it sometimes hard to believe that the things represented in the culture as normal and common are actually real:
- Wow, guys, you have your real selves? How do you know it’s not just another mask?
- No, it can’t be that loud music in shopping malls is not overwhelming for someone!
- I’m sure, that spontaneous love-at-the-first-sight is totally made up by poets and writers!
- Why would they even care about that person’s gender, it doesn’t matter?

And, from time to time, it would create some common dismissive phrases to raise as a center of doubt:
- Isn’t everyone having the same problems? Do NT people actually exist and are not just the same NDs like me, just masking better, with NT stereotype being nothing more than just a fairy tale made by exploitive society everyone is chasing hopelessly?
- Isn’t everyone pan by nature and just putting themselves into certain frames according to societal expectations?
- Doesn’t everyone just decide first that they want to fall in love with this particular person - based on their merits or potential candidates availability, and work towards feeling something later, and all those crazy spontaneous love stories being just late justifications of bad choices?
- Doesn’t everyone sometimes have dreams about having a different kind of body?
… and so on

The worst thing is, that despite knowing how ridiculous such doubts are, despite knowing all of the reasoning and all, part of me will still often have this doubts - because it’s not about actual reason, it’s much more about that basic instinct of having yourself as the origin, keeping all the coordinates relative to yourself.

Do you guys sometimes have these doubts about ‘maybe I am not so different after all, and others are just masking better?’ Are you also sometimes frustrated ‘It can’t be that some people actually do that’? Which are the things that you stumble upon most?
@actuallyautistic

Paul H :tinoflag:
I can highly recommend watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix. It is a South Korean courtroom drama series about an lawyer with autism spectrum disorder, and her battles to establish herself as sucessful practitioner in a large law firm. So far it has covered neurodiversity, same-sex relationships, sexism, and suicide in a thoughtful, intelligent and nuanced manner. Korean with english subtitles, or dubbed if you must. IMDB 8.7 100% Rotten Tomatoes.

#Netflix #Neurodivergency #MustWatch
