Latest England COVID data
📈Note: The number of deaths registered in previous week was affected by our Easter Monday Bank Holiday, so caution needed when comparing across weeks, and with expected deaths. #ONS
🤦Please note also, this airborne disease can still cause hospitalisation and/or #LongCOVID.

Continued thread

Just for comparison, note below Figure 1 from the #ONS report today (14 May 2025) which indicates that the 'number of deaths from all causes, registered by week, in England and Wales, between 29 April 2023 to 2 May 2025, 'was higher than was expected in Week 18.'
'Bank Holidays' such a weak excuse?

No-one is going to be surprised that the Govt. has launched an investigation into the problems at the Office of National Statistics.

Led by Sir Robert Devereux (ex-senior civil servant), it will examine 'the efficacy & capability of the ONS, as well as its organisational structure, culture & leadership, after internal work failed to fix the problems identified with specific data sets'!

Other than tech-deployment problems it'll be interesting to see what else Devereux uncovers?

Explications.

Curiosity struck and I went and found this dataset from the #ONS on our national trade figures by region.

The US is the UK's biggest single trade partner *by far* while exports to the EU as a whole are approximately double our exports to the US, and our imports from the EU are approximately four times bigger than our imports from the US.

Some interesting dynamics to consider as these trade wars ensue.

In the ONS' scramble to try to improve is labour market data, its scrapping the Survey on Living Conditions to free up budget to try and find a way to collect better information about work/employment.

While not the only survey to compile data on living standards, it is notable that the ONS/SLC was directly comparable to EU data sources & thus was one way of tracking how the UK was doing (comparatively) after Brexit.

How odd, that's the survey they're scrapping?

Trouble at the Office of National Statistics continues with staff churn, failing methods & funding problems all undermining reliability of the data on which Govt. depends for formulating policy.

The potential difference between ONS & independent assessment (here by the Resolution Foundation) of employment suggest labour market policy (especially regarding the 'economically inactive') may be misconceived (which many would argue anyway).

In a sense Labour *is* flying blind
