Just 0.001% of the deep seafloor has ever been captured by photo or video images, a new study finds.
That which has been captured is “biased” and potentially unrepresentative: 65% of observations have been in the waters of the United States, Japan or New Zealand, according to the study.

Radiation Status in the Marine World by Manoj Kumar Jindal et al, 2025
Natural radiation is omnipresent everywhere on the earth, and humans cannot avoid it. Natural radiation is a critical aspect in understanding the health issue and predicting the existence of radionuclides.
This book has information about radiation status near the ocean in all areas on Earth.
Weekend #Plankton Factoid
Light is an extremely important factor in the oceans. It governs not only photosynthesis, but is also an important cue for vertically migrating zooplankton and needed for visual predation. The finding that 20% of the #oceans, especially at vital polar regions, are increasingly murky over the last 20 years is very worrying. Over 9% had the photic zone reduced by more than 50 m. This will impact #phytoplankton growth and #carbon flux. #science

Planet’s darkening #oceans pose threat to #marinelife, scientists say
Satellite data and numerical modelling revealed that more than a fifth of the global #ocean darkened between 2003 and 2022, reducing the band of water that life reliant on sunlight and moonlight can thrive in. Effect is evident across 75m sq km (30m sq mi) of ocean, equivalent to the land area of Europe, Africa, China and North America combined, and disturbs upper layer where 90% of marine species live.

In happier news:
The EU and six European countries have just deposited their ratification of the Global Ocean Treaty at the UN in New York.
The specific countries are:
Cyprus
Finland
Hungary
Latvia
Portugal
Slovenia
The EU doesn´t count as a separate ratification, but likely means we will soon see more european countries' official ratification.
We are now at 28/60 ratifications!
