With this in mind, this is how I see the world working right now...
The Billionaire Class, literally fueled by fossil fuels, wants to avoid all accountability and keep the party going as long as they can for themselves, which means a very short term outlook.
First having stripped the Global South of their natural resources and now having made their countries unlivable (poverty and climatically) have used the necessity of those people moving to the north as a cudgel to make the Global South even worse.
Psychology tells us that loss aversion is much more powerful than the pull of possible gain. They are playing that card powerfully with the middle class convincing them the people "below them" are coming to take their suburban lawns.
In reality of course, it is the Billionaire Class that continues to take all the money. And burn up the planet. Driving more immigration. Driving more right wing politics.
Until we are all dead.

NL's plan: spend millions of dollars/several years on hopefully developing tech that doesn't exist yet, to store "up to" 1GT of carbon emissions (4% of global annual) from #oil & #gas.
