"Increasing violence in northern Nicaragua this year has displaced rural families and led to calls for more drastic action from the international community, which activists say hasn’t done enough to hold the #Ortega government accountable for human rights abuses.
"For years, Indigenous communities on Nicaragua’s northern #Caribbean coast have suffered threats, kidnappings, torture and unlawful arrests while defending communal territory from #IllegalSettlements and #mining. This year appears to be as bad as ever, and residents say they are desperate for help.
"'Urgent measures must be taken to protect these communities,' said Gloria Monique de Mees, the OAS rapporteur on the rights of Afro-descendants and against racial discrimination. 'Failure to address the crisis will only embolden the Nicaraguan government to continue its repressive campaign.'
"Much of the violence is concentrated within the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (#RACCN), a jurisdiction communally governed and titled by Indigenous communities since the late 1980s. It’s home to #Miskitus, #Mayangnas, #Ulwa, #Ramas, #Creole and #Garífunas peoples, and contains mountain, #rainforest and coastal #ecosystems.
"The area has attracted non-Indigenous Nicaraguans, known locally as #colonos, looking to set up #farms, #logging operations and artisanal #mines. Massive #gold and #copper deposits have also created opportunities for multinational mining #corporations, with backing from the government.
"Indigenous communities say they’re worried about losing #AncestralLand as well as traditional farming, hunting and fishing practices as the forest is cleared and mines #pollute local streams and rivers."

Es ist schön, dass Sie die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Situation in #Nicaragua lenken, aber die Bezeichnung "linksgerichtete Regierung" entspricht nicht der Realität, hält keiner objektiven Prüfung stand und ist höchstens eine Selbstbezeichnung des Diktatoren-Paares #Ortega und #Murillo. Indem Sie die nicaraguanische #Diktatur so nennen, rücken Sie alle ernst gemeinten linken Bestrebungen und Politiken in eine höchst zweifelhafte Ecke.

"The United States has a long history of meddling in Nicaragua. Between 1912 and 1933, the U.S. military occupied the country.
"Between 1981 and 1986, President #RonaldReagan’s administration secretly and illegally sold arms to #Iran in order to fund #Contras, a group the #CIA had recruited and organized to fight the #socialist #Sandinista government led by #DanielOrtega. In 1986, details of the #IranContra Affair became public, resulting in congressional investigations.
"#Ortega’s Sandinista government ended in 1990 with the election of opposition candidate #VioletaChamorro as president amid reports that the United States had provided funding to help her win."

This is a reminder that power corrupts. 
The Frente Sandinista achieved to free Nicaragua from the bloody grip of dictator Somoza in 1978 and built up a real progressive alternative, politically, culturally, socially and economically.
Alfabetization campaigns, peasant poetry, women's rights, cooperatives of coffee growers. Ortega was the leader of a movement seen as a beacon of hope and a new way of socialism with freedom. Thousands of international volunteers went there to help.
Of course, the US bears part of the responsibility (with infamous Henry Kissinger) with their mercenaries sewing terror during a 10-year war.
Then, the Sandinistas hold free elections and the people voted for the US-backed candidate as they knew that the terror would end.
Ortega remained in the oppositon for over 15 years. Most of his comrades, especially the more progressive ones, left the party, but Ortega became remarkably creative in forging alliances to regain power. He allied with the catholic church (then the evangelicals weren't as important yet) to speak out against abortion in order to gain their support. He used his influence at the suopreme court to help a conservative president guilty of corruption.
It is important to remark that liberal capitalist democracies don't have so much to offer for a population in poverty. So, at some point, also with the help of Venezuela's petrodollars, Ortega achieved to become president again.
This time, little remained of the humanistic visions of the former revolutionary...
And here we are, crackdown after crackdown.
