It's on a desktop or laptop? (I suspect desktop, because, you don't really change cpu on laptop).</p>
argv minus one<p>Welp, when I stress test the new <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/CPU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CPU</span></a>, temperature spikes to 70°C, clock spikes to 5.something GHz 😳, and it stays there, nice and stable. No throttling or runaway temperature. When I stop the stress test, the temperature immediately plunges.</p><p>I must have installed the cooler correctly. Yay! 🎉</p><p>A mundane accomplishment for some people who <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/BuildAPC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildAPC</span></a> regularly, but I last did this 8 years ago, so I'm happy to have succeeded on the first try.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMR</span></a></p>
argv minus one<p>Hey <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMR</span></a> / <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCgaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCgaming</span></a> people: would you consider <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/CPU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CPU</span></a> *idle* temperature to be a reasonable way to assess the state of one's <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/thermalPaste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thermalPaste</span></a>?</p><p>I ask because measuring and comparing CPU performance under load is rather complicated and difficult. Seeing an idle temp of 30°C and calling it good is a heck of a lot easier…but is it actually good?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/BuildAPC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BuildAPC</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMasterRace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMasterRace</span></a></p>
argv minus one<p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCPartPicker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCPartPicker</span></a> is SO COOL.</p><p>It reminds me somewhat of outfitting my ship in <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/EliteDangerous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EliteDangerous</span></a>, with its overviews of available parts, specifications, prices, compatibility notes, power draw for the build, and even a diagram of the slots that the parts will fit into.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMR</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMasterRace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMasterRace</span></a></p>
argv minus one<p>So, I thought I'd buy a pre-built <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PC</span></a>, because then it will Just Work™ and I won't have to fuss with parts failing and whatnot.</p><p>Well, from what I can see, if I want an <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/AMD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AMD</span></a> CPU and GPU (which I do), I'll have to buy it from either HP or a smaller outfit like iBUYPOWER, all of which have a reputation of…parts failing.</p><p>🤦‍♂️</p><p>Welp, if I'm going to take my chances with failing parts either way, then I may as well buy and assemble the parts myself. At least I'll get exactly the parts I want.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/PCMR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PCMR</span></a></p>
