Next Saturday, March 22nd, Firestorm will be hosting Rattling the Cages co-creator Eric King in conversation with two veterans of the George Jackson Brigade—Janine Bertram and Mark Cook. Together they'll reflect on their experiences as political prisoners and the legacy of one of the most prolific US revolutionary groups in the 1970s, which synthesized movements for women's liberation, queer liberation, and Black power.

Stopping Unnecessary Jail Expansion with Decarcerate Sacramento

radical-guide.com/stopping-unn

Decarcerate Sacramento is again preparing to mobilize against the Main Jail expansion on February 26 when Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will be reviewing recommendations for the next stage of the $2 BILLION jail expansion, and the community needs to show up and fight back!

We're just two days away from the next event in the Rattling the Cages series! Join former political prisoner Eric King who will be speaking with family members of political prisoners about how the repression and violence of incarceration impacts more than just those imprisoned. Sharon Shoatz (daughter of former political prisoner Russell “Maroon” Shoatz), susie day (partner of former political prisoner Laura Whitehorn), and Rochelle Bricker (Eric's partner) speak to the familial harm of prison repression and the unswerving love and solidarity that keeps hope alive.

I was excited to realise yesterday that not only is there a second season of Andor starting next month, but I only watched the first half of Season 1. Onto episode 8 tonight.

The prison complexes on the ocean planet immediately reminded me of the floating super-prison in the MCU. Then I had a dark thought. What if this is the endgame of SeaSteading technology? The ultimate Guantanamo ...

Video Reveals NY Prison Guards Beat Prisoner Robert Brooks to Death While Handcuffed

The New York Civil Liberties Union said in a statement, “It shouldn’t take a cold-blooded killing captured on film to be a wake-up call to our leaders that the culture of officer brutality in NY prisons must be stopped.”

Democracy Now!Video Reveals NY Prison Guards Beat Prisoner Robert Brooks to Death While HandcuffedNewly released body-camera video shows guards at an upstate New York prison beating a handcuffed prisoner to death. Forty-three-year-old Robert Brooks was pronounced dead on December 10, a day after guards at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Utica repeatedly punched and kicked him in the face, chest and groin. Four of the officers involved were wearing body cameras but did not activate them. At least three of the officers involved were previously accused of assault. Brooks was Black; all of the officers who took turns beating him appear to be white. Ahead of the video’s release, New York Governor Kathy Hochul fired 14 state prison staffers and ordered an investigation into Brooks’s killing. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has also opened an investigation, said it was a difficult decision to release the bodycam footage. Letitia James: “I do not take lightly the release of this video, especially in the middle of the holiday season, but as attorney general, I released these videos because I have a responsibility and duty to provide the Brooks family, their loved ones, and all New Yorkers with transparency and accountability. My deepest condolences go out to Mr. Brooks’s family.” The New York Civil Liberties Union said in a statement, “It shouldn’t take a cold-blooded killing captured on film to be a wake-up call to our leaders that the culture of officer brutality in NY prisons must be stopped.”

In 2024 our co-op collaborated on nine incredible events with Eric King and Josh Davidson, co-editors of "Rattling the Cages: Oral Histories of North American Political Prisoners!" Next Saturday, Eric and Josh will be joined by Rattling the Cages co-creator Sara Falconer to share how they started this oral history project, the importance of inside-outside collaboration, and how replicating these oral histories is something you can do, too. Sarah and Josh will additionally talk about a quarter century of creating the Certain Days calendar, building relationships with political prisoners, and why our support matters!

Today in Labor History December 18, 1865: US Secretary of State William Seward proclaimed the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment, prohibiting slavery throughout the USA. However, the thirteenth amendment included the following clause: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Jim Crow laws in the past and racial profiling today result in large numbers of African Americans and poor people being incarcerated and subjected to legal slavery. Some were even rented out to the same plantations that had used chattel slaves in the past. But with the U.S. having both the world’s highest number of incarcerated people (2.1 million) and the highest incarceration rate (665 per 100,000), there are plenty of people from all ethnicities who continue to be subjected to legal slavery.

Tomorrow evening, we're hosting an important conversation in the Rattling the Cages series, with a focus on politicized prisoners! Series creators Eric King and Josh Davidson talk with Hector “Bori” Rodriguez and Farhan Ahmed, both of whom spent decades imprisoned in New York where they became politicized as they fought for their freedom.

@danie10 @hcj Australia's new law effectively means #teens will not be able to research topics that may OR MAY NOT BE affecting their society, as they move into #adulthood, this effectively reduces under-16s in #australia (and if this global trend continues, the world) as second class citizens, 2nd class youth will invariably lead to 2nd class adults. Information is NOT #alcohol, its NOT an addictive drug, it is the bigtech platforms that have weaponized the social spaces.... social spaces in general are NOT THE PROBLEM!

the australian govt comparing this law to an #alcoholBan ought horrify every living person on earth. we should be reminded also of what the "war on drugs" actually achieved, in so far as it simply put a bunch of recreational users into the #prisonIndustrialComplex. I put forward that THIS is the real goal of this new global push by govts to ban #information for our youth.

It is also akin to the burning of books, because when govt (today in the 'land-down-under') ties access to the internet to getting a #facescan, or a govt-issued #digitalID that will spell the end of #academicFreedom. The so-called #freeAndOpenWeb and #fediverse community must move swiftly to make australia's new laws redundant.
