Steven Harman<p>A few hours ago we moved the last trickle of jobs over to latency-based queues. We're slotting into one of:</p><p>* within_30_seconds<br>* within_5_minutes<br>* within_1_hour<br>* within_24_hours</p><p>We've hit a few snags - blowing those SLAs when slow jobs clog the works, starvation, unable to detect and auto-scale the lower latency queues fast enough, etc… Those problems were always there, but we didn't "see” them, and so didn't address/talk about them. Now we see them. And fix them.</p><p><a href="https://ruby.social/tags/Sidekiq" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sidekiq</span></a> <a href="https://ruby.social/tags/Ruby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ruby</span></a> <a href="https://ruby.social/tags/Queueing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Queueing</span></a></p>

Ben Waber<p>Next was an interesting talk by Eva Tardos on learning in strategic <a href="https://hci.social/tags/queueing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>queueing</span></a> systems. I don't think I've thought about queueing since undergrad, but it's always fascinating how small tweaks in approaches can yield massive gains in performance <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2bvbCyl2Tw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=l2bvbCyl2T</span><span class="invisible">w</span></a> (3/6)</p>
