#RaspberryPi5 #RaspberryPiOS má stále problém s HW akcelerací spousty věcí. Tohle je jedna z těch chvil, kdy uvažuju distro hop. Steam se nespustí vůbec, Moonlight neustále brečí, že nemá HW dekodér. Řešení je buď rollback na starší kernel, nebo se porozhlédnout, jak je na tom například Alpine
@dec_hl I know.
Besides #RaspberryPiOS there's like @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs and me dabbling (@OS1337) tho technically they all are #i486 as they use #Linux kernels beyond the cutoff date for #i386 support.
@ryanc propably because #RaspberryPiOS just uses a linux-firmware
metapackage from #Debian and they don't differenciate in their build process beyond #32bit and #64bit ?
Lately I've been doing more #SelfHosting again due to the current situation. Of course, I'm paying particular attention to power consumption and noise. After good experiences with the #ARM64 architecture, even with power-hungry applications such as Mastodon, I'm now using the smartphone technology for my homeservers, too.
There are #SBCs with more open hardware, but the #RaspberryPi is widely available, well documented, powerful and inexpensive. And it is available with up to 16 GB of RAM.
Anyone operating a server on the Internet must install #security updates quickly. However, many people forget to restart running software so that the new version runs instead of the old one. The #needrestart tool helps with this on Debian-based Linux systems, which unfortunately is usually not pre-installed.
On my Raspberry Pi 4, needrestart
always runs correctly (automatically after apt upgrade
). On my Raspberry Pi 5, however, I first had to create a configuration file as described by the main developer here:
https://github.com/liske/needrestart/blob/master/README.raspberry.md
Previously, the tool always claimed that a reboot was necessary because it thought an outdated Linux kernel was running.
Next, I want to activate #LUKS hard drive encryption on both raspis. Unfortunately, this is not as easy under #Raspbian or #RaspberryPiOS as on other Debian systems. If you have managed this: Please let me know how you did it!
https://github.com/liske/needrestart/blob/master/README.raspberry.md

Recording the screen is a sore point of Raspberry Pi OS as only a handful of hard to find tools work under Wayland and most are command line only. Botspot's Screen Recorder is a new tool that glues a GUI to the others and adds useful functionality such as recording a webcam feed and the screen at the same time.
https://github.com/Botspot/botspot-screen-recorder
The only alternative is Vokoscreen-NG which is more limited:
Setup -> I have a #RaspberryPi #RaspberryPiZero2W running #linux #pios #RaspberryPiOS #headless
Aim: I want the pi to always offer a #hotspot #wifihotspot on #boot
based on the command
nmcli device wifi hotspot ssid pizerohotspot password my_password
Is this below a bad solution ?? -> I came up with this solution in the link below using a .service but fear it shows I am clueless? Is there a better way? Thanks!

@topher the problem is the #Enshittifiaction and #Enfattening of #Websites and #Applications!
Seriously, I think that #Microsoft should be sued into insolvency for the way they create 100% avoidable #eWaste with #CensorBoot and #Windows11 to the point that if I didn't have my current job, I'd basically collect all the old machines from companies that are stupid enough to use #Windows [and they'll likely give them away for free minus SSDs / HDDs instead of paying €5+ for #recycling], shove some #Linux on [i.e. #RaspberryPiOS, #BunsenLabsLinux or #UbuntuLTS] and sell those off as used electronics for a good profit.
#RaspberryPi owners, how do you back up your #RPi?
I don’t have an extra hard drive, so I need to back up to #GoogleDrive. I’ve installed #Rclone and tried creating a #BASH script, but I’m struggling with it.
If you’ve set up something similar or have recommendations for an efficient backup workflow, I’d love to hear them! Bonus points if you know any good courses or resources to improve my scripting skills.

@1password hoping you can help here. I'm using #1Password and #OpenSSH in #WindowsTerminal here on #Windows11 to connect to my #RaspberryPi. I need an easier way to work with files, though, so I'm trying to set up #WinSCP. I've exported my key from 1Password in both formats available. I noticed it didn't have a file extension so added .pem to the name. No matter what I do, WinSCP won't take the key. Neither would #PuTTY when I tried it. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Anyone else who thinks they might be able to help is welcome to reply too.

#RaspberryPi users, I need help! After updating my kernel to version 6.6.67-v8-16k+ and rebooting, my MATE desktop environment won’t start. All I get is a blank screen, and Espeakup keeps repeating "black square black square black square." I can SSH into the system, so it’s partially functional.Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
• Rebooting the Raspberry Pi.
• Checking journalctl logs for errors (I have a full log if needed).
• Reinstalling the kernel with sudo apt install --reinstall raspberrypi-kernel.
• Ensuring my /boot/config.txt is configured correctly.
Some relevant observations from the logs:
• The desktop environment (MATE) and LightDM don’t seem to start.
• The error vc4-drm axi:gpu: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes appears multiple times in the kernel logs, suggesting a GPU/display issue.
• Services like rpi-connect-wayvnc.service are failing repeatedly.
• Espeakup works in TTY mode, but no graphical interface is available.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to diagnose or fix this without reinstalling Raspberry Pi OS? Could this be related to the kernel update? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!#Linux #Kernel #RaspberryPiOS #MATE #Accessibility #TTY #SSH #Debugging #LinuxHelp #Tech #Technology
I just got my new #RaspberryPi500, but I’m finding #RaspberryPiOS isn’t very accessible. I’m thinking of installing another #Linux distro. Any recommendations from fellow #Blind Raspberry Pi users? I’m most familiar with #ArchLinux—would it work well on this device? Also, what’s the best way to install it without an SD card reader?
Looking forward to your insights!

@ai6yr @dthacker9 @fuchsiii yeah, I got a 3 pack of those t620 for like €60 with PSU, 16GB M.2 SSD and 4GB RAM each; plus they are #amd64 so they can even run a lightweight Desktop distro like @bunsenlabs or #RaspberryPiOS.
Worst case you put #Kodi or #RuneAudio on them and abuse them as "Network Players"...

@xeniac I know that this is the case, but it's not a technical unavoidance despite the #RaspberryPi being a non-#UEFI - #arm device.
The solution in that regard would be to boot into a #live / #setup mode like with #RaspberryPiOS for #i586-based #PCs and extend it to a setup that allows creating a new custom image with #LUKS - #FDE enabled and properly encrypted.
I'm not even demanding much, just a simple #TUI / #CLI setup like @ubuntu / #UbuntuServer has with basic customizations.
This file(?) appeared in my home directory. I can’t delete it or move it to trash.
Any suggestions for how I can find out what it is, why it’s there, how I can get rid of it, etc.?
