I don't suppose anyone in or near #rdguk wants a #reprap #3dPrinter ?

I built mine years ago, and I've barely used it since. It worked well, last time I used it, but it needs a bit of fettling if you want to print over the whole bed area (there's a bearing mounting that needs to be printed and fitted).

Community, DIY, open hardware and software has been part of the commodity #3Dprinting world for over 20 years (#RepRap et al.). Open projects, with parts you can source yourself or via kits (e.g. #Voron).

What if—what IF!
We did the same for plain old #2Dprinting..? I’d build a 2D laser printer from a kit.

(To be fair, I found a few resources and it seems like a daunting talk: lots of moving parts, optics, etc. 3D printers almost feel simpler, they’re just robots that push out hot plastic.)

If the central protection from machines evolving to eclipse humanity is the lack of a means of reproduction, we might well be fucked.

When I first read this I thought about #reprap, and mechanical machines that are capable of reproduction. This was a little spooky, but it's pretty indirect, and there's all sorts of wrinkles (most repraps can't reproduce their electronics).

But then I thought about software. If we think about software as machines (and I imagine the author would have if it had existed when he wrote this) then we've recently crossed this line with gusto, perhaps first with the general availability of Github's autopilot and then accelerated from there with several products which are fully capable of allowing software to reproduce and mutate without human intervention.
