CAROLE KING
Tapestry
1971 Canada pressing
[gatefold version]

Last spin of the night, as per my wife’s request.

This album is like an old friend of mine. It’s been present in all phases of my life; from a young child hearing it at my Aunt and Uncle’s place, to my teenage and young adult years via the listening habits of my many ex-girlfriends, and now, where it is a shared favorite between my beautiful wife and I.

These songs are timeless, and there’s a reason why this album is held in such a high regard, and why it’s part of the Library Of Congress’ National Recording Registry. I will never get tired of hearing it.

As much as I love and adore the first handful of Alice In Chains records (boy do I EVER), this is my all-time favorite recording of Layne Staley’s otherworldly vocal talents.

Towards the end of that decade, my friend Jim and I would always argue over which #90s supergroup record was better; this or Temple Of The Dog.
I love that record, too. But somewhere around 2006, I was able to finally convince him that this is the clear winner.

I guess it’s “River Of Deceit” here that everyone remembers most, but it’s hardly the best song here. Every song is crazy good.

As amazing as that whole time was, I get really sad sometimes when I hear these records.
Kurt, Layne, Shannon, Scott, Chris, Andrew, Jeff Ward…

Rock n roll is like this romantic fire.
It burns and it burns and it burns…

And one day you finally realize that what’s kept the fire going is BODIES.

RED KROSS
Red Cross E.P.
2020 U.S. reissue
Special Edition [expanded]

How insane is it that the MacDonald brothers were only 12 and 16 years old when they did this?!

6 really scrappy (but very tuneful) punk rock songs. It’s incredible to think that Neurotica is just six short years away.

In 1981, Red Kross were alongside some legendary California bands; Black Flag, Desendents, Minutemen. And listening to these songs, you become very aware of the importance of RK’s contributions to that early scene.

The bonus tracks here are excellent too, including a live take of “Fun With Connie”; recorded at The Church in Hermosa Beach, birthplace of Black Flag.

I will always prefer the latter Red Kross; excellent records like Phaseshifter, Neurotica, Third Eye, and Show World. However, listening to THIS (and their first two official records) is a fascinating A to B history lesson.

Ended up writing a tool in Godot which allows me to quickly iterate on & render out prerendered backgrounds. At runtime, a stencil buffer is used to composite the background with dynamic geometry such as players. Looks pretty darn convincingly like an old PS1 game I think, and workflow is very convenient!

BTW: I'm currently looking for work and I *love* working on tools like this in any engine. So if you need somebody who loves automating things to make other peoples' lives easier, consider: Hire me please!!

1987 Canada pressing

Not at all an uncommon record, but one I still love and adore all these years later.

One of those great #80s #indie / #alternative albums.
A killer opening track in “Litany (Life Goes On)”, and super distinctive lyrics and guitars throughout.

I feel that lots of my MUSICIAN friends love and appreciate this record, but general music fans I talk to either don’t remember them, or had never heard of them to begin with.
Great album that begs for reappraisal.

UNWOUND
Fake Train
2023 U.S. reissue
Valentine Card Pink #vinyl

One of the most underrated and under-appreciated bands of the #90s

With all of the reissues and box sets that Numero have put out and reissued, they give to great lengths with loving care to help introduce them to a new audience, and jog the memories of those who may have forgotten about them completely.

Although they twisted and evolved from record to record, and they were ALL great, I prefer the early, scrappy and noisy Unwound records, and Fake Train, the one that started it all, is still at the top of the mountain for me.
It is so artfully ugly, and of the greatest #noise #posthardcore albums ever.

Sara Lund was always their secret weapon. Her drumming is phenomenal. Without her, I’m not sure they get anywhere, wherever it was they got to.

Tom Jones should feel honored.
