A legendary 108-year-old roller coaster from Mass. is facing its end — again
Once an icon at Paragon Park in Hull, the wooden coaster found a new life in Maryland. But now its current home is shutting down as well.

Sam Marks, a Wild One enthusiast from Falls Church, Virginia, said he didn’t have the chance to ride the Giant when it was at Paragon Park. But he did ride it on the first day it was in Maryland. After all, he had a season pass to the park.

He clearly remembers his first ride, saying the roughly 100-foot initial drop delivered a jolt of g-force, followed by a rush of nonstop speed. Riders are lifted from their seats on the two hills, catching bursts of airtime. As the ride seems to settle, it suddenly jerks into a sharp turn, tossing you side to side.

"It was quite a violent ride," Marks said. But, with upgrades, it did eventually smooth out, he said.

Marks met his husband at the amusement park, and the pair loved the ride so much they decided to get married on it.

"We chose the Wild One because it has stood the test of time, and today that time might be up," Marks said.

hello, my name is neo. i'm a transmasc in my 20's. generally speaking i like machines that move people, amusement rides, shooter games, and various sci fi and sci fi-adjacent media. i'm in between jobs right now, but my background spans aerospace engineering, acting, teaching, and operating amusement rides.

i occasionally draw and shoot 35mm film! (even less often, i write mediocre fanfiction.)

i'm on the fence about talking about my mental issues on new social media pages but you might find me mentioning them down the line.

The coaster wheel project is complete (for now)!

The wheel is out of the vinegar and got another good scrub with soap and water before getting dried and oiled a little bit.

Any rust that's visible is flash rust- which formed after treatment while it was still a little wet with water. Pretty hard to avoid any rust.

I'm super, duper, incredibly happy with how it turned out. Even the rust on the grease port has been cleared. Most of the iron oxide (the black dust) was removed in the vinegar soak and with a soapy scrub.

The very last thing I plan to do is to give it a little bit of a polish. But here it is, all cleaned up!

I do wish the smooth coating was more intact but this is the wheel I have to work with unless someone at Holiday World reads this and wants to send me a new one! ;)

If I ever get around to trying to polish this thing up I will definitely share pics of it. Until then, that's it for this restoration. It was a lot of fun and I'm super happy with it. Here's the wheel this morning after an overnight in the tank. It got a scrub with the kitchen brush, dried up, and oiled a little. It's still going to go back in the tank later, but damn, I'm happy with the progress.

You can see some of the smooth coating (teflon?) on the road surface of the wheel is still intact. This is why I didn't want to sandblast or brush it. I wanted to preserve as much of that as possible.

Was great to get back to #waltdisneyworld after being away for over six years. Stayed in beautiful accommodations, ate wonderful meals, and experienced some awesome, new rides! Loved revisiting some of the classics (Everest, Missions Space, Tower of Terror), but the new Guardians ride is my clear, new favorite at the parks. I just moved from the soon-to-be defunct sanjuans.life to the groovy and happening beige.party!

Hi, I'm Eric! I'm one of "those" people that spent most of his life in #SiliconValley and escaped in later life to the #PacificNorthwest. I spent some halcyon times that then turned tumultuous in #Portland before landing, through all sorts of weird life changes, in #OrcasIsland, Washington.

Still an active, if somewhat grizzled, #techie, I got to do a bunch of stuff (mostly involving #ReleaseEngineering) in places like Sierra Online, The Santa Cruz Operation, Frame Technology, Xerox PARC, DreamWorks Animation, Yahoo!, and Puppet.

I've been an erratic participant at #BurningMan. Originally, hanging (but not officially) with Spock Mountain Research Labs and Lamplighters, taking long breaks then coming back and doing stuff with #BLD

I have been an avid traveler. I love scuba diving, amusement parks, especially #rollercoasters. Back in the day, I was co-contributor of The World of Coasters and had some fun contributions to NPR, CNN, American Heritage.

After Covid set in things changed. I don't get out much and managed to stay free of it. I plan on keeping it that way. If one is to be stuck at home, San Juan County is a damn fine place to do it.
