The Australian Treasurer Hon. Jim Chalmers has been promising to expand the right to repair - it will be interesting to see what emerges in this policy space.

Although more researchers use #AI, its full potential for achieving global sustainability goals #SDGs remains largely untapped. A team of scientists now analysed 792 peer-reviewed articles and found a critical gap: only a few studies combine advanced AI applications with deep #sustainability expertise.
To truly harness AI for sustainability, a more integrated research agenda is needed, the authors conclude.

The US just withdrew from #UNESCO.

The Trump State Dept put the rationale into one succinct paragraph:

"UNESCO works to advance divisive social and cultural causes and maintains an outsized focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals [#SDGs], a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy. UNESCO’s decision to admit the “State of #Palestine” as a Member State is highly problematic, contrary to U.S. policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-#Israel rhetoric within the organization."

Under UNESCO rules, the withdrawal cannot take effect until the end of 2026.

PS: There's some history here. Reagan withdrew the US from UNESCO in December 1983. GW Bush rejoined in September 2002. Trump withdrew us in his first term, October 2017. Biden rejoined in July 2023.

Some researchers introduced the phenomena of peri-urbanisation where the peri-urban areas have become an extension of urban system. Consequently, the existence of peri-urban agriculture is under the threat of land conversion, particularly into housing and other settlement-related services. This study is among the research that provides empirical evidence of the contestation between urban housing expansion and the presence of agricultural land. By using the case of Malang Regency in East Java Province where the peri-urbanisation of Malang City has taken place, this research utilises the spatial autocorrelation analysis to explain the spatial pattern of peri-urbanisation. We found that all variables describing the agricultural sector in Malang Regency exhibit positive spatial autocorrelation with clustering patterns. The distribution of areas with High-High, Low-Low, Low-High, and High-Low agricultural conditions facilitates a more equitable distribution of agricultural resources in Malang Regency as a hinterland and Malang City as the centre of activities. Distance to the city area (Malang City) is one factor that causes clusters to form in the southern or northern areas of Malang Regency. </p>

@johnzajac Thanks for the article. I'm not so interested in the tug-of-war within and between a two-party system. I'd like to hear more about how each candidate, across the spectrum, will act to advance the UN's #SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

In my continent, it could look like a North American #GND (Green New Deal), where all people have healthy food, housing, clean water, time for self-care and family and civic life, and can actually #thrive.

Putting to one side the question of whether technology can actually save us, it is assumed here that a functioning regime of technology transfer is crucial to any attempt at planetary adaptation and mitigation of climate change. The development paradigm is a key structuring mechanism of international relations. How development is conceptualized and implemented as a regulatory practice, therefore, shapes how we understand obligations and duties between states and between the Global North and Global South. As such, it conditions the space within which we understand obligations to share technology.
