So I bought and used the cursed USB to 1/8" serial cable to reset the password on the APC #UPS network card. It's probably been about 20 years since I had to think about 9600 baud, 8N1 parity.

The ebay seller was pretty cool about it. They sold me 2 of these network cards. One had the default password and one didn't. When I pointed this out, they refunded one. Well, the cost of the cursed cable is about the same as the network card. So it all worked out in the end.

I will give #SchneiderElectric this much credit: one of these UPSes had firmware from 2014. And the release of firmware that I uploaded this week was issued in February 2025. That's pretty impressive, really. Especially for a UPS from APC, which they acquired.

@deutrino

This isn't exactly the advice you want, but I ended up "building" my own. That is get a TrippLite ATS (automatic transfer switch), and an inverter that runs off 12V batteries and use that.

Had too many that had batteries die, and combines with UPSes that had decent uptime were very expensive.

For me it made the most sense. And it's worked really well over the years, gives my home network and servers multiple hours of backup.

#UPS#APC#APCC

just gonna toss this out there, does anybody know of any alternative firmware projects for uninterruptible power supplies #UPS, especially #APC / #APCC / #SchneiderElectric ?

I have some old ones that are long past their warranty date, which I suspect would work a lot better with LFP batteries if the firmware were twiddled.

zero chance I have the bandwidth to do this myself, but if there's a pre-existing alt firmware I could install, I'd be very interested!

Hackers demand France’s Schneider Electric pay a $125k ransom in baguettes

Hungry hackers have demanded that France’s Schneider Electric pay a $125,000 ransom in baguettes.

If the ransom demands aren’t fulfilled, the threat is that sensitive data, including information about company projects, staff, and user data, will be spilled.

Tom's Hardware · Hackers demand France’s Schneider Electric pay a $125k ransom in baguettesBy Mark Tyson

$125,000 ransom seems small—but why do the scrotes want it paid in baguettes?

French manufacturing firm #SchneiderElectric (EPA:SU) was attacked last week. The #Hellcat gang—formerly International Contract Agency—claimed it stole the data of 400,000 customers and employees.

Known as “Grep” or “Greppy,” the hacker’s searching for baguettes in payment. In #SBBlogwatch, we want fries with that. At @TechstrongGroup’s @SecurityBlvd: securityboulevard.com/2024/11/
