Carolannie<p>Sulfur tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) clump: They usually are less spread out and form a clump that looks more like a pile of biscuits, but these are in full display. These toxic wood decomposers are common world wide.<br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/FungiFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FungiFriday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/FungiFriends" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FungiFriends</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a></p>
Carolannie<p>Dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is one of a few deciduous conifers. This “living fossil” was thought to be extinct but was discovered in 1941 growing in a remote mountain region in central China. It’s now a popular ornamental because it grows fast. This one is of several along a sidewalk next to a new apartment building.<br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/OurNeighborhood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OurNeighborhood</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/MapleLeafNeighborhood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MapleLeafNeighborhood</span></a></p>
Carolannie<p>Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a shrub native to the Southeastern US through Texas. It’s used widely by Seattle gardeners, taken with its vibrant purple berries which stand out in autumn after the leaves fall off. A lot of creatures eat the leaves and berries, and it is used by Native Americans as a medicinal plant.<br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/OurNeighborhood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OurNeighborhood</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/MapleLeafNeighborhood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MapleLeafNeighborhood</span></a></p>

Carolannie<p>One of my favorite trees on our block is this huge tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). I think this one is about 60 ft tall? ( a bit less than 20 m). The second photo shows the distinctive shape of the leaves (the red ones are Japanese maple), The tulip tree is native to the eastern US. The wood from the tulip tree, (also called yellow poplar ) is a beautiful pale yellow with green or sometimes purple streaking. My late husband and I spotted some at a Lowe's in Boulder, CO and bought it PDQ. It's really hard to find west of the Mississippi. <br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a></p>

Carolannie<p>Our fall colors have been really spotty this year. Some things are still bright green, some things that normally change just turned brown, and some things are just now coloring up. <br>It's still a pleasure to walk even on a foggy cold day in October. Carolannie<p>Walking along the street to Cowen Park, I chanced upon a Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia). It was pretty fair sized. I usually only see shrubby yew hedges, so seeing a tree was interesting. I also liked its symmetrical leaves and pretty seed cones. Apparently, the soft aril is edible, but the seeds are toxic as is the rest of the plant. <br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleOlmstedParks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleOlmstedParks</span></a></p>
Carolannie<p>Big leaf maple trees do not turn a uniform lovely yellow in fall, but instead gradually brown out. I don't know if this is just how they are, or if the powdery mildew that covers them in late summer is a factor. But they still glow in autumn colors against the sky.<br><a href="https://c.im/tags/Photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Photography</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleWashington" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleWashington</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleAutumn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleAutumn</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/CowenPark" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CowenPark</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/SeattleOlmstedParks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SeattleOlmstedParks</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/NativePlantsOfThePNW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NativePlantsOfThePNW</span></a></p>
