In fact, I still do — but I find it harder and harder to convince myself that there's any point.</p><p>Firstly, people don't want changes. And I perfectly understand that, because I'm so tired myself. And if it weren't for a kind of stubbornness, combined with a sense of responsibility and lack of a better way to live, I would love to kill it all with fire and move to Gobi.</p><p>People are used to living in a cesspit and they're good. They don't want to go out into the clean air — at the best, if their cesspit starts stinking too much, they want to move into a neighboring swamp, the one with perfume in it. Others will decide they're not for them, and perhaps become even more convinced that alternatives suck and mainstream's the only way.</p><p>Secondly, the world can hardly be described otherwise than a cesspit-in-a-cesspit. You can try convincing people to use more secure services, apps, and so on — but they'll still be using browsers and operating systems that invent even more imaginative ways of spying on them. The goalpost is moving away fast.</p><p>Thirdly, over and over it turns out you can't really trust the alternatives. You convince someone to switch from X to Y and a month later it turns out Y became evil as well. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. How many times can they be expected to switch? How many times can we suggest another alternative? Can you trust anyone anymore?</p><p><a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/PixelFed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PixelFed</span></a> turned out to be run by an asshole, who on top of that keeps bragging about buyout offers. <a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/tags/SimpleMobileTools" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SimpleMobileTools</span></a> were sold. Successive websites and applications are either becoming enshittified or abandoned. W zasadzie nadal chcę — ale coraz trudniej mi uwierzyć w to, że to ma jakikolwiek sens.</p><p>Po pierwsze, ludzie nie chcą zmian. I ja doskonale to rozumiem, bo sam już nie mam siły na zmiany, i pewnie gdyby nie ten upór połączony z poczuciem odpowiedzialności i brakiem koncepcji na życie, to najchętniej rzuciłbym to wszystko w pizdu i wyniósł się na Gobi.</p><p>Ludzie przyzwyczaili się do życia w szambie i jest im dobrze. Oni nie chcą wychodzić na świeże powietrze — co najwyżej jak już zaczyna coś za bardzo śmierdzieć, to wolą przenieść się do szamba lepiej wyperfumowanego. Możesz przekonać ludzi, żeby używali bezpieczniejszych serwisów, aplikacji, itp. — ale wciąż będą to robić na przeglądarkach i systemach operacyjnych, które ich szpiegują na coraz bardziej wymyślne sposoby. Osiągnięcie realnej zmiany staje się coraz trudniejsze.</p><p>Po trzecie, raz po razie przekonuję się, że alternatywom nie można ufać. Przekonujemy kogoś do zmiany z X na Y, a miesiąc później okazuje się, że Y jednak też jest złe. Z deszczu pod rynnę. Ile razy można się przenosić? Ile razy można komuś proponować kolejne alternatywy? Kelson<p>Remember the "Simple Mobile Tools" suite of Android apps? It <em>used to be</em> a great collection of basic apps that didn't slurp up your data, clog up your apps with advertising, or charge exorbitant prices. It isn't anymore.</p><p>At the end of 2023, the suite was <a href="https://tgrush.bearblog.dev/simple-mobile-tools-falls-victim-to-zipoapps/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sold to ZipoApps</a>, who proceeded to do all of those things. (This appears to be their business model: buy an app with a large install base and squeeze every last bit of monetization out of it while destroying its usefulness, fun, and credibility.)</p><p>Seriously: They replaced the $2.99 one-time payment for the Pro version of Calendar with a <strong>$15/week subscription</strong>.</p><p><strong>Fortunately the apps were all GPL</strong>, and there's a <a href="https://github.com/FossifyOrg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">complete fork called Fossify</a>. They're still slowly rolling apps out to F-Droid and Google Play, with about 10 out so far.</p><p>I use the <a href="https://hyperborea.org/reviews/apps/fossify-calendar/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">calendar</a> and <a href="https://hyperborea.org/reviews/apps/fossify-contacts/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">contacts</a> apps all the time, and the voice recorder is good for taking quick notes.
