"There’s a Riot Goin’ On"
As it is often the case artists being far ahead of their time will get the recognition for their achievements a lot later than they would have deserved.
Sly Stone's 1971 album had a lot of experimental and innovative elements woven into the sound with which the musician anticipated techniques of producing and composing which came to full fruition in Hip Hop and Post Rock years later.
That combined with rhythms so slowly dragging on that you had the impression they could be overtaken by themselves and a groove so heavy that it seemed to melt into the earth presented a funky soundscape that at least to me was totally new at that time.
Of course the need to riot against the empire hasn't diminished since then in any way
instead in a world on the brink of total war against man and nature alike
it's more urgent to rise up against the powers that be than ever.
The ConversationSly Stone turned isolation into inspiration, forging a path for a generation of music-makersToday, millions of musicians record and splice tracks from their bedrooms, closets and garages. Half a century ago, the funk pioneer revolutionized home recording.
